Mini-Me

Hi everyone, im new to the site but i came on here to hopfully get some answers from you guys.

I drive a 96 dx coupe and in desperate need of some power, I'm not exactly sure what the exact engine code of my car is but i thinks its d15, it the one with the upward mounted throttle body if that helps. now ive been considering doing the mini me build up just to get some extra go but ive been told that the sohc vtec head doesnt bolt right up with out some machine work. Now i dont know if this is true of not cause ive heard many different things from many diffferent people so i was hoping you guys can give me a good view of how hard this install is and what i would require to make it run good.

thanx

If you decide that building it is too hard, I have a mini-me motor (little better block) for sale with new timing belt. PM me.

Now if you do go it on a d15 you don't need to machine the head. Here is a list of what you shoud do/need to buy.

1. vtec head (Z6 or Y8)
2. new timing belt
3. new waterpump
4. vtec intake manifold
5. vtec distributor (for whatever head you get)
6. Wiring (RPM activated switch)
7. Better header and exhaust
8. New head gasket
9. New axles
10. Better tranny (Si one)

That is all I think

The difficulty depends on lots of things:

1. Your ability
2. Your tools (BIGGEST THING)
3. Set cam timing with pistons etc and ignition timing)
4. Cleaning the block is a bitch!
5. Patience
6. If you want to use the RPM switch or switch computers (You should!) which can be very difficult.

Any more questions just PM me. I also have lots of parts for the swap.

No machining needed. Very straightforward.
Buy a manual, read how to change a headgasket, swap head.
Oh BTW, you have a D16Y7. Very good to build on.
Swap the intake manifold with the one from the SOHC VTEC engine, and a B18 throttle body.

if it's a 96 civic then it's a d16Y7 .... clear the crud thats on the front of the block flywheel side there's flat piece of metal where the code is stamped in you'll see it

no problems with the manifold. Make sure to bolt the manifold to the head before installing the head otherwise getting at the back manifold bolts is brutal!!
