car died , alternator maybe?

Yesterday night driving on the highway in my 90 integra I noticed my interior lights started dimming and my stereo system turned off and stuff , I was on the highway doing like 120km at 3500rpms or so. I put my foot on the clutch and dropped the RPMS down to idle speed and all my lights and stereo started working again. I was just hoping to make it home but about 10kms from my house same thing happened except the car started chugging badly and it died on the side of the road. I know the battery is good cuz when the car was off , all my lights and accessories were working properly. The car doesnt start or turn over or anything now. I think its most likely I need a new alternator. But I just want to be sure it is the problem before I start taking it out and replacing it.

Car should start and drive just on battery.

If your alternator dies, the battery light will come on in the car.

I would check all the grounds and the power connection on battery and starter.

Make sure everything is clean and tight.

You're right , I just went outside and used an old battery and boosted my car and it runs. I guess its time for a new battery.

Make sure you check all the ground and power connections..

Make sure everything is solid otherwise it'll kill another battery.

Yea I will make sure of that before I purchase a new battery. Also , would you say that alternator is still good then? Because I don't want to drain the new batttery if my alternator is going also. The car is 2nd hand and the previous owner had put in an alternator about 2 years ago.

Test it after you put the new battery in.

The voltage across teh battery terminals should be above 14V..
If it's 14 or higher, the alternator is good.

Do what Cablerat said. Get a voltmeter and check to see if u are getting around 13.9V or more around 14V while the car is running. If not then you need a alternator. Go and buy a rebuild alternator for around $130. Don't buy used alternator because they might be seized up already for not using it. If u said it might be the battery, check to see if the acid is low on water. That will normally be hard start. If u are driving and your lights went dim, that means for sure your alternator is no good. While the car is running, the car will not stall if it's the battery problem.

This is what i do.. the way to figure out whether is battery or alternator..

Get car started.. take off one of the battery terminals and if the car still runs the alternator is fine.. if the car dies.. the battery is just shot.
