Question handbrake

hey everyone, I just got a 05 civic si on monday, and yesterday i notice that the handbrake was very loose when i would pull it up. It feels like the first 2-4 inches there is no pressure, and no effort and it would fall back down, but after that it locks in place. So I am wondering if my hand break just needs to be tightened? It is a manual car so i do need my handbrake, and thanks for anyone who helps.

Could just need adjusting or it could also be in need of rear shoes/pads

The cable just needs to be tightened. I forget if the 05's have an access panel on the back or not. If not, the center console may need to be removed to properly adjust it.
