You Need A 2.0L Bottom End To Make Power Allmotor With A B16 Cuz No Matter What Your Gunna Do To It, Its Never Gunna Make Any Good Tq On A 1.6 Bottom End

obviously the more displacement the better on a n/a setup. After spending a good chunck of change building a n/a b16 in the past and seeing all of the different b20vtecs i've built/tuned and how much power they make, i'd prolly just build a b20vtec before building your b16 too.

Even if you just slap a stock b16 head on a stock b20 bottom end and keep the revs down, you'll make at least 160-170whp and 135-150wtq. You could make more WHP by building the b16 and revving it to the moon, but like others have mentioned the torque will still be weak (110-115wtq).

If you're still sold on building the b16, do what i've mentioned in previous posts. If you're at all interested in building a b20vtec, let us know, we'll go more into whats involved.

As some say "there is no replacement for displacement"

I have a B16a also and i wish i had about 20 more WHP and 20 WTQ! There would be nice. I didn't want to change the factory mounts to keep it original. Soooo, maybe a good Turbo set-up would be the way to go. Any suggestions, without going overkill?

you wouldn't have to change any of the factory mounts to use a b20 bottom end.

I love turbo cars and daily drive one myself.

Awww booo...i wish i knew that before

Zeeman, are you running boost on a b16a? If so, how many pounds? I've been kinda sketchy about a turbo on a high compression motor, for the reason of wearing out the motor. Sorry to go off topic here.

ya, i've got a boosted b16a, that I originally built for n/a, so its even higher compression than a stock b16. I'm sitting at about 11.5:1 CR. The bottom end is bone stock.

I'm running 12psi now off a GT3255E. The engine has been boosted for 2 years now. I've put at least 120,000kms on this engine since I swapped it in (5-6 years ago) and I'm sure it had at least 100,000kms on it when I bought it.

A recent compression test showed solid compression across the board and it burns very little to no oil. This engine has seen its fair share of abuse, from hours on the dyno to track days and lots of use on the street.

I'll prolly turn the boost up to around 15psi for this summer. I could care less if it blows up as I have a built engine to use to reach my goal of 400-450whp on a b16a. This engine has given me years of trouble free fun and owes me nothing.

Vary nice! That is some serious power. How is your fuel economy?

That's great to know that boost won't kill a high compression motor. I'm looking to get a max of 250hp. Overall i'd like to have more torque.

I made 250whp 175wtq @ 8psi.
My gas mileage has increased from before it was boosted. I get like 500-550+kms to a tank of gas, but I'm now using a LS tranny. With the b16 tranny I was getting 450+kms to a tank of gas.

Any time you increase the power output of a particular engine its lifespan decreases. Especially when you're doubling the original output. The added power = added stress on the engines internals, so **** can happen real quick, especially if you're trying to cut corners. Tuning is key on boosted setups.

Seen. The b16 tranny would be too short for that amount of power.

How much boost would you put on a tuned-up stock b16 with a new stage 1 clutch and lightened flywheel?

well, my stage1 clutch was useless at anything over 8psi, even at 8psi it would slip bad when shifting hard. I'm now using an exedy stage2 clutch and it holds great, even when shifting hard.

The b16 tranny was actually very good for the car, its just that its a daily driver mainly that sees the track, so I had to compromise a little slower track time for reasonable revs while cruising on the highway, which equates to better mileage. I use my car to get me around more than I do for track days, so I can live with the longer gears of the LS tranny. Shorter gears will always = faster 1/4 mile times, unless they're so short that you don't get any traction.

Boost is relative to the size of the turbo you're using. I wouldn't say "how much boost can I run?" so much as "how much power can this engine handle safely?".
B16s take 300whp all day long reliably. So if you're using a GT35R i'd say 10psi is the most i'd run, but if you're using a 14b then it'll take more than 10psi to break the 300whp mark. See what I'm getting at?

If you only want 250whp then you'll most likely make that with PSI levels in the single digits. Like I said before, my car made 250whp @ 8psi. I've got a garbage turbo manifold with tiny runners and am only using a 2.5" exhaust with a "cat", baffled resonator and muffler to help keep the noise down while driving. Its loud as hell when in boost, but any car will be with a free flowing exhaust. 3" exhaust is ideal for turbo cars and will make more whp/wtq at the same PSI and help the turbo spool up as quickly as possible.

it's cheaper to swap out the bottom end... than it is to put a turbo kit on it.
