the round soloberics or the L5/L7?

if L7/L5 (newer models of the solobaric) then hands down L7/L5 lol.

How much space is he willing to give up in his trunk/hatch?

Then I can give you my opinion.

He didn't mention anything about space so, just answer his question if you can.

If you knew how a speaker responds in a box/free air aplication, and how it reacts with the inside of a car, you'd understand why I'm not giving him an opinion yet.

I also need to know what kind of vehicle it would be going into, as well as the amp/power he will be running to it.

It's like comparing apples to oranges....they are both fruit, but it depends on your taste, and what you like.

Better yet, why don't YOU answer his question, as well as the reason for your dissision. (I'd like to see what you would say without knowing all the info).

I can, but without knowing what he wants to do, then it's MY taste that I'd be giving him....not his.

I personaly like a dual bandpass box myself, but they are hard to construct properly.....takes up alot of room.....and is almost impossible to hear the sub distort.(which is bad if you can't hear that.....you'll distroy the speaker in no time)

Advantage.....doesn't need alot of power to get loud.......has a natural roll off point built into the box by the way it limits frequences......and goes low.

I can write up an entire page of reasons to go with sealed/ported/bandpass/dual bandpass/isobaric......ect....ect...ect....

In the end, it's up to the person that has to listen to the thing on a daily basis.

well let see......you seem to have alot to say......

Do me a favour.....humour me.....without looking it up on the net, can you tell me what these mean........

FS, QTS, VAS, EFF, XMAX, SENS, Cabin loading. (and there a bunch of other little things that I'll leave out for now).

Once a person has this info, THEN they can start to decide what type of enclosure would be best for a particular speaker. Then you have to take into consideration the natural cabin gain/loading that will occure when the enclosure is put into a car or truck.....then the power handling that the speaker can take when it's in the box....ect...ect...ect.....

There are MANY variables to take into consideration before a desision is made, and even after that, sometimes it STILL doesn't come out right. Most speaker programs don't take into consideration the air preasure of the location/elevation you live in....ie....in the Rockies, or down in L.A. next to the beach.

In the end, alot has to do with the box that you use, NOT the speaker. You can take a W3 (ie) and put it into a box that doesn't suit it, and it sounds like ****.......then you can take a Radio Shack speaker, put it into a properly desinged box, and blow the W3's doors off.

Any speaker can sound good in a properly desinged box.

I wish my friends car was still around....(8 x 15" in the back of a Chevette.) you had to see it. Even with 1.5" of MDF on the roof, and around the car as well as the box, we still were able to make the roof move around 1" up and down. And that was with only 25W of power to each sub. (it hit 164.7db)

Another had 4 x 15" in a simular car......hit 162.2db. (he had 50w per sub.)

So for me to say which speaker i would pick, would be useless.

I for one, like the old DVC XTR Orions.....W3's ( and the W7's)......Kaption...just to name a few, because I have used them personally and know what they are capable of when put into a properly desinged box/enlosure.

By the way......did you ever get those Dyno sheets?

Now back to the question.....

Whoa so much tension in a simple subwoofer thread..

Tension? nope.

Anyways.....

What is the info that came with the speaker? Ie...the VAS QTS...ect.....stuff.

What does he have to power it?

How many speakers?

Does he like a tight sounding"hit-you-in-the-chest" type of bass or, a rumble type of bass?

Is he going to run it in mono or stereo...(you better say mono......even though there is a way to run it in stereo and have a mono output).

This is one of the reasons I don't compete anymore. It's hard to design a Good sounding system in a car that is well ballanced.....sounds good....goes loud....hits hard......and doesn't sound like a bazoki. (I'm poking fun at you Rice)

Here, use this little program and punch in all the numbers....it will give you a rough idea in which one would sound better. I say "better", because there is NO best speaker. (they can all sound good)

http://www.ajdesignsoftware.com/downloads/ajsealed.zip

Remember, it's the ENCLOSURE that really helps make the speaker sound good, not the other way around. They have to go hand in hand.

Merry Christmas to all....and to all a good night.

I need another T3.
