need opinions on headunits... plz

alright, im looking at a new head unit
cause i just installed my 5.1/4 alpine type R components today... and im ******* loving them. took 7h, but it was well worth it (had to do a lotttttttt of custom fabrication, painting, shrinking, wiring... fu*k the previous owne!!!r..)

anyways, i need a new deck to buy
dont have the coin right now, but taxes are coming sooooon

im looking at a low end pioneer or panasonic headunit.

i was thinking an alpine, but they all look cheap for the price they are.

im looking for a hu with a decent equalizer, cdr playback, no mp3 playback, nothing special, just something with decent equalizing.

and my price range is around $300

Yeh Martys deck looks very nice.

Another question? are you planning to buy the deck to power your components better? Cause if you are, dont rely on the deck, amp them. You will be so much happier with 50 + watt rms per channel vs the 15 watt rms from the deck.

Pioneer I have always liked, great decks IMO. Kenwood are ok, I love the Pioneer P1R and the Alpine F1 lol I think there both way over your budget

I have a panasonic 602U. Good deck but the cds get kind of hot

I suggest just going around to different stores and playing around with them.

i dont expect much better out of the components

im just building my system right now

but my plan is

1. components (done)
2. head unit
3. amp for comps
4. brown bread all around
5. amp for subwoofers & 2 10" subs
6. si rear speaker 6.5 alpines (optional)

probably wont end up going that smooth
but yea

Few questions I gotta ask you.

Will you be running a external crossover or eq? If so then more than 1 set of outputs isn't nesessary. You only need 1 set of outputs then the eq/crossover will split the signal up and do a better job of filtering than the deck would.

Also, do you want flashy? or plain?

If you just want a basic cd player that has a good da converter (some of the JVC have wicked ones) then get a basic deck, and buy an external eq/crossover like an Audiocontrol and have a really nice signal to work with.

looks good to me, but what are it's limits??
for instance, should i want to go video with the ghost it'll handle the upgrade..
not sure if you're thinking of going in the direction, but the best thing to do is look at where you want to end up and get the best you can that will take you there..

Well I had an old school Orion Cobalt 10" sub about 4-5 years old in a 1.75 cu^ft ported box tuned to 32hz off my jbl 300.1 and it pounded really nice. Bass was really loud and sounded good.
