99-00 SIR calls for 91 octane
96-00 SI calls for 87 octane
Check your owners manual.

in a pickle you can use lowgrade octane gasoline and the knock sensor will take care of the rest...tho fuel mileage and performance may suffer a bit...at a buck 20 a litre I'm starting to hate my GS-R haha

your also reading a manual from 1991 or earlier. Gas quality has gone up sooo much from then. A d series engine doesnt need 91. 87 is fine for a d. You can use 91 in it but there is probably no gain other than a few extra k .
My B16 has head work done and I run 94 and in a pinch I run 91.
The less detination the better!
