Regular Gas VS The Expensive Gas

Is there really a big difference between which gas you pump into your car. I've been talking to a few people about this and got a bunch of different opinions, I'm most likely going to be purchashing a 98 Civic Si, and a friend of mine told me I have to start pumping the expensive gas (ie. Ultra 94 and the such), another friend of mine who too has a 98 Si told me not to bother and pump regular gas, he's been doing the same thing for about a year. So what are the good and bads of it? Should I stay away from regular gas with my Si, or should I pump it anyway? Share your thoughts

Your friends wrong. 87 regular is fine.

That is assuming you have a d16y8 in there. Premium would be a huge waste of money, there are no real benefits from it on that engine.

This topic has been covered a bunch of times too.

read your owners manual and it says what gas is recommended.

to answer your question a 98 civic si has a d16y8 motor. it is single over head cam. is pushing 120-7 hp i believe hardly a performance motor and it does not have any power on the higher end of the rpm spectrum. translation no need for premium gas. use 87 octance regular gas as told by the manufacturer.

wouldn't putting 94 in the d16 actually decrease gas milage and performance?

I have the new 06 Civic Si and I have been putting in the best gas because I was told to but a lot of my friends have been telling me there is no point because its all scams.

2 Of my friends have the Dodge Durango & the car is a V8 I believe and they are told to put the best but they don't and they have had the cars for about 3 years now and they have had to probs....

Your Si requires premium gas so I'd keep putting it in.

d16 boosted or a b16 or most other JDM engines require 91-94 octane so you don't get knockin at high revs

Armani G I guess you haven't fully read your owners manual yet.
Scams? I think not. You should read up on compression ratios & engine designs.

Compression RATIO

So far I've only done one fill up on my 06 EX with 91. Why? The Shell station had only 89 & 91 left and they were selling 91 for the price of 87. 89 was still more $

sure.. if you like detantion 89 should be fine for a boosted D

you gotta pay to play. If you cant afford to put premium in your car then don't boost, all you'll have is problems.

The 06 Si has a very high compression ratio...higher than the EP Hatch, actually higher than my Prelude. Its a 91 or higher car. Both the gas door and manual will say Premium unleaded only. Remember they are pumping 200 HP out 2.0 Litre engine, thats 100 HP per litre. I believe the CR is 11:1. Lude is 10.5:1 and its premium fuel only.
