Washing an Engine

I work on a constructiopn site and everyday it's a dust storm. My engine is freakin filthy (come to think of it, I don't think its ever been thoroughly cleaned)...So I'm going to wash my engine soon. I bought some engine cleaner at CT; It's just a spray on and wash off job.

Anyways, I know to cover up my distributor and my air filter, but are there any other precautions I should take before I hose it down?

well, do it on a cold engine so the aluminium doesn't stain

other than that, use Simple Green liberally or even that new orange GUNK stuff. let it sit awhile, and hose it off.

when I use to detail cars the shop made me run the car with a generous amount of throttle while sprayign a hot water pressure washer on it..lol but aslong as you cover the dis you wont have to do it while the motor is running which isn't very good..

i've seen better results with a hot engine, not too hott, but cold is always better, and cover everything electrical and openings well. then detail those spots covered later on.

Engine should be warm - not hot to the touch. For best results use a pressure washer...

Cover everything electrical...but what else is there besides my distributor that could be in danger?

Thanks for the advice
