Washing Engine Bay?

Hey guys,

i'm planning on washing the engine bay today if the rain holds up and i'm wondering if i need to worry about anything? the only thing i was going to cover was the filter on my SRI, other than that am i safe spraying water washing off soap suds etc in the engine bay? or is there other stuff i should look out for... it's just that i saw EG4door's engine bay last week and that thing was so damn clean..... and mines dirty so i figured hey i can use a clean too it's been a while. any info would be great, TIA!

I cleaned mine last week and all I covered was the dist. Make sure you have different brushes, sponges for the tuff spots. I used Simple Green Automotive from crappy tire and it worked great!

Remove the battery and clean the area with a water and baking soda solution to neutralize any leaking acid. Then proceed with your washing I LOVE washing my engine!

I did mine two weeks ago. I bought 2 cans of the Foaming Engine Cleaner from Crappy Tire, and just used a regular hose. I covered the distributor with a ziplock bag, and covered the whole engine bay with the stuff. A little simple green on the tough spots, and presto...

the clean, wimpy D16.

I bought the Simple Green degreaser, and wasn't satisfied.

I found that I really had to scrub to take the crap off.

GUNK is apparently they best, but it messes up asphalt surfaces, so the best thing to do would be to go to one of those drive-in "garage style" DIY powerwash crap, and do it there, the ground is concrete I believe.

Theres one of those behind the Country Style on Eglinton/Tomken, just north of Pocock.

EDIT: I got the gunk before I got Simple Green to try it out, and it worked GREAT!. I did a very small area of the engine, and it was left VERY clean. But then I noticed my asphalt phuking up, so I returned it and bought simple green.
Which I wasn't satisfied with.

well maybe it's good that i didn't end up buying the simple green yet then... i just got back from CT and it's like 18 bucks for 3 liters! WTF? what do i need 3 liters for? i was looking for a spray bottle or something, i'm not cleaning a fleet of civics, and apparently that's the smallest they have as well....... maybe i'll try out the gunk stuff and do it at the Mavis/Dundas wash..... i am a fan of some other gunk products such as liquid wrench..... they all seem to be doing a good job.....

oh yah and the other thing is that they all say you have to apply the degreaser on a cold engine... which sux cuz that means i have to do it in the morning before i go anywhere.... who invented that ****? lol where's the convenience?

I bought mine at the CT on Dundas(Near Dixie). They are all independent franchises, so I don't know if that gives the owner some leeway in what products to carry...

Its a black spray bottle I believe, I found it on the aisle with other cleaners, and car wash stuff.
It should be there, if anything ask the guys at the auto. parts counter, they seem to know a bit more than the other employees when it comes to cars.

Just wondering what would happen if I didn't clean my engine bay for a long time??? Also, my car is rust proofed and stuff, isn't it going to look dirty anyway? or is this just for ppl who don't drive their cars in winter? Sorry about all the questions. Just want to make sure first.

Thanks,
D dot T

I don't think there are any real serious problems if you don't wash it..unless there is 3 inches thickness of caked on dirt, it shouldn't make a difference.

I don't know about the rust proofing, sorry.

I guess if you have a minimal amount of exterior contaminants in your engine bay you can expect better cooling? But don't take my word for that, I personally think it is more of an aesthetic thing, as well as simply promoting the longetivety of engine parts.
But like I said, if there is minimal dirt, I mean my engine bay hasn't been cleaned, EVER.

ya, rust-proofing will make it look like shyt..
that's why i had them do the rest of the car but leave the engine bay alone..
