Please HELP! Exhaust system installed today - Too Loud

Today my friend got 2.25 piping all the way from the cat back on his B18B civic.

No resonator (well, just the hi-flow cat) and a three chamber muffler.

Its too LOUD and raspy, when you push it.

What can he do to make it very quiet by still maintain good flow?

He's thinking put the catalytic converter back in it, and then also add two large resonators?

Any advice would be appreciated. He's already wasted enough time and $$ on this car.

Perfomance improvement has a few of them, but we can't guess which one is the quietest.

Thanks

Exhaust muffler

Its a "Three-chamber" muffler that looks like a stock one, but is different inside. Its a no-name brand, but it really looks exactly like the magnaflow one, both in and out.

Looks like this:

stock header

Stock header, but the cat is the hollow "race" style that is essentially a perforated style resonator, with catalyst lining the sides ( it passed emissions with it).

might be a good idea to make sure there are no leaks in the exhaust system, you will know cuz the raspy sound will come from underneath, and not the tailpipe...a weak link in a pipe connection will generally make a raspy sound around 3-4,000 RPM...could be an exhaust bolt/and spring not tightened enough..??

Good and Bad

Ok, I listened to your advice and I also got a (new) catalytic converter installed. I can't afford the fine...

I made them lower it from the hoist, and started it for fun (so cat and 3 chamber muffler but no resonator) It was quieter, and the raspyness was finally gone, but it was still a little LOUD. It droned a little too.

Then, they put in a 12" resonator (maintaining 2.25" diameter) it was the perforated core, not the louvred core (yes, I know the difference.)

Ok, its quieter now.

Even so, the car is a little bit louder than I had hoped for

**But guys, the car now FLIES! Its a rocket compared to the stock piping. Anything above 3700 rpm is way better now... better than the 1.5" diameter muffler the previous owner had before!

I thought this wasn't going to make a big difference, but it made a HUGE improvement.

Flooring 4th gear at even 90km/h pulls wayyy better than before.

The car really has "punch" now.

So, you are happy, yes? that's what matters... loud or not, it depends on how you drive it. My Saturn is dead quiet when I just drive it, but if I'm booting it, it's deafening. I got a flowmaster. Ya... the loudness is still from the 12" resonator.

Improvement

Really, the improvement in acceration is obscene.

But keep in mind that's cause I went from a 1.5" diameter to a 2.25 (really about 2 since the bends reduce diameter a bit).

Bbarbulo, your probably right, the 12 inch resonator is too small so I'll get a 24 inch one, maybe even the nice magnaflow one. I'll do that later. Gotta punish the g/f with the current setup for a while. lol

Besides, her rotted out 323 is still louder than my civic!
