no-vtec to vtec question

ok if i do a mini me setup on my D16y7 using Y8 manifold and head. do i need to change the Distrubitor or rewire it, or does it work the same? from some people i heard its diffrent...

you need a ecu, or shift light or rpm activate switch to get vtec to engage.. +ve
