Grinding 3rd. Gear

Grinding 3rd. Gear
As the topic says, basically if I rip it in second, and then put it in 3rd., i hear the gears grinding.
Usually what I have to do is either take it easy and granny shift at 2k Rpm, or pop it in neutral and coast for a bit before switching to 3rd. , that usually helps.
My buddy said that he had the same thing happening in his civic, and he said that his mechanic told him its the synchro. for 3rd. gear.
Is this true?? If so, I understand that it requires the removal of the tranny to switch the synchro. Is this synchronizer just for 3rd gear, or is there one for all of the gears, if so, should I replace them all now, or only the one for 3rd.???
Any help is appreciated,
MK

that's signs of ur 3rd gear synchro going. labour will cost u a pretty penny although the parts alone are dirt cheap. i suggest u get another tranny alltogether. it ends up being more cost effective and could possibly be cheaper. and synchro's wearing out is due to abuse. a normal driver with a normal car should not have worn out synchros if he knows what he is doing. that being said, my 3rd gear synchro is going too..hondas are notorious for that but i race my car at the track so that could explain some of it

Thanks for the replies.
Most likely we will do the synchros ourselves, with a little help from our mechanic.
As for a new tranny...I guess I might as well stick with the one I have now, since I most likely will be doing a swap in the long run.
Probably a B16. We will see...

DJ. If your car is still under warranty, you might want to check with Honda first. I had the same problem on my 98Si, and they replaced the syncros for third and forth for free. Now the shifts are perfect especially with new bushings and a short shifter.
