3rd Gear is dying HELP!

Agh! My G/F Mazda Protege tranny is dying.

It keeps kicking out of 3rd gear (it's really freaky when it does that)

It's happening more frequent now and I'm getting worried, obviously somethings wrong but anyone know what it might be.

It keeps grinding the gear after it pops out so I imagine that the gear will have to be replaced.

The car isn't even a year old this this will still fall under warranty?

Man I told her to get a Honda...

P5s and newer proteges are well known for eating up 3rd gear, some as soon as 5000 kms off the lot. This is under warranty for drivetrain... cuz it's not really a use/abuse issue.

Pilot bearing in the clutch maybe?
We had a similair problem with my dad's 93 si hatch...car wouldn't get into any gears, or if it did it would pop out evey once in awhile...

hey ed,

if you hear grinding, then that third gear maybe missing some teeth... due to wear and tear..or just plain bad shifting.... you should fix it for your gf asap...

tell her not to rev to high, no downshifting either... cuz the car could lock up and lose control... very dangerous... get it fix now!

Phew! THis is a common problem??? AND there's a recall? How come they didn't mail us?

It's not a P5 it's just the reg Protege with the sports package.

That make a diff?

Mechanicals are very similar, and like I said, P5s and Proteges are notorious for doing that in 3rd gear.
