Unhappy Coilovers seized

Hey, this is just a warning to anyone thinking about buying coilovers...DONT. Mine just seized up so they cant be adjusted anymore...so much for the whole point of having coilovers! It's just not worth it in Canada, too much salt causes the threads to rust and get clogged. These arent the cheapy ones either (Neuspeed/Bilstein combo).

Anyway, I'm still trying to figure out if i should pay the shop $200-$250 to take the whole thing off and clean it. Does this sound like a reasonable price to you guys to fix seized coilovers??

Would that be general purpose anti-seize, or a special kind?

For that price you could almost buy a new pair of springs....

I don't think its worth the hassle...

Finding and acceptable ride height is the pain....

That's what makes the OE sports from H&R so nice.....firmer ride with a minor drop in ride height......approx only an inch
But if you want it slammed they can do that too....

heard that anti seize can make things even worse because they are sticky and attracts even more dirt onto the threads?

The anti-seize will keep the treads from corroding......all you have to do to take off the dirt is power wash it.......$2 for powerwash, $5 for anti-seize = no headache later.

By the way, you can also spray silicone sray or WD-40 (both repell water) druring the winter months......Also helps it from seizing, but you have to do it often.

It depends on what type of locking mechanism you have on your coilovers. If you have the dual ring locking setup, then yes they are prone to seizing. If you have the ground control style single ring kocking setup then it won't. Mine's never seized on me and I've had it for over 2 1/2 years and my car is driving all year round.

Try heating up one one of the rings and not the other using a blow torch (pretty hard I know). That would cause one of the rings to expand and not the other, and then spray water onto it. The sudden expansion and contraction will cause some movement and hopefully losen the two locking rings. BTW: Don't heat it too much, you might warp it.
