help!.. can't remove spring from rear strut, bolt seized!!

I was installing springs on a 99 civic, font installation went perfect. But I couldn't complete the rear installtion. The upper bolt that hold the spring/strut assemble together look's to be seized. I put the allen key in the top, and used a wrench to try to removed the bolt, no luck. I tried with the spring compressed, and not compressed, no luck. Spayed wd40 all over the place, no luck. Used an impact gun, no luck. Put it in a vice, no luck. Is there some kind of trick to removed this bolt that i don't know about......help?

what kind of impact gun did you try on the top? how many ft/lbs is the gun etc? some guns are areally crappy.

If its a good one then what you have to do is cut the dust boot and grab the rod as close to the top hat as possible.

if you need more help let me know.

If you have a socket set with hex key adapter sockets, try using that with a ratchet. It gives you better leverage to hold on to. Have the ratchet and your wrench aligned so that your hands are beside one another and push the ratchet as you pull the wrench. Those nuts are on there tight.

If that don't work, PM loudsubz.

ya it's a crappy impact gun, I'm not sure how much ft/lbs, but i know it's not enough to install lug nuts. I'll try that stuff you both mentioned, if my buddy lets me. Right now, he's driven around with the front lowered only. We gave up on the rear at around 12am today. He might just break down, and go to a machanic, we kinda wore out the allen key hole too, we tried so many times. Have u guys ever ran into problems like this doing the rear? is it common?

Ran into it yesterday doing some, we did what i mentioned with cutting the metal dust boot and grabbing onto the rod just under the top plate and used the impact on it, and voila came off, before that the impact was just spinning the whole rod, and usualy this gun takes them off np.

380 ft/lbs CH one.

I was there watching.......the front's came off, but one of the backs gave him a little trouble. He cut off the boot sleeve, and used a pair of vice grips to hold the rod. MAKE SURE TO CLAP IT AS FAR TOWARDS THE TOP AS POSSIBLE. If you don't, the damage to the rod will destroy the seal in the shock when compressed, and later make it leak.

The car looked good when finished too. I wish I could do mine.

When I did my 97 suspension, fronts wre a breeze...then the rears. The bolt that bolts the shock fork to the LCA was seized. Tried everthing humanly possible with hand tools to get that thing loose. No go, had tot ake it to mechanics.

Another thing I couldnt get off were the lil rings on the bottom of the front shocks that keep the shock from sliding too far into the fork. Needed them off to put them on my new Koni reds. Had to get the mechanic to press them off.

I sware by Liquid wrench, its some crazy ****, wd 40 doesnt compare to the penetrating power of this stuff... let it soak on the nut overnight, then an impact gun should spin it off no problem...full psi, back and fourth untill it spinns loose, make sure the springs well compressed, base of the shock in a bench vise... worse case, like loudsubz said, grabb the rod with some gripps, this usually ends up ruining the shock tho because when its lowered the bumpstops are gurenteed to hit down at somepoint, which means the chewed up surface of the rod is going to enter the shock seal and rip it...If you can get the dust cover off compleatley you might be able to slide the bump stop down and grip it where the bump stop covers the rod...then you would be safe...new upgraded shocks kik *** if you got the cash!! Good Luck
