clicking noise..

im stumped about this one, i have a click noise under my car. it comes from the front right. ive replaced/removed the following with no luck:

- removed all heat shields
- new cat, w/ flex hose from header
- new intermediate pipe
- new left side (long) cv axle

im thinking it is the right cv axle.. im at the point where i need to find exactly what it is because ive spent too much money already. the right side cv axle looks to be okay. the boot is slightly damaged (beginning to crack) so im hoping it is just this. i should have had both replaced at the same time, but i thought the other one was fine. could this be the rack & pinion at all? im stumped.

it generally happens when turning, or braking hard..
its not a consistent noise, it will just happen everynow and then. originally i thought it was my cat or something hitting the ground, but everything was replaced yesterday... so i dunno..

is it a mechanical clicking, or the sound of something that comes loose occasionally?

Could be ball joint or tie rod or wheel bearing. If you are not comfy doing this, take it to a front end alignment shop and they'll tell you what you need. $50 for an alignment beats paying $200 in parts you don't really need.

Sounds like CV.

Are your brake rotors scored?

Any tire clearance issues?

my rotors and calipers do require maintenence in the front, but i did not think this would be the problem. because it is not only under braking, but cornerning aswell. even occasionally bumps

the tires clear fine, the car is not lowered and is riding on 14" azenis

im thinking its the cv joint, but not completely sure.
tomorrow when i get some time ill jack up the car and inspect it further. my fender lining is slightly loose, im doubting it is what is making the noise..

it would be a good idea to check your engine mounts as well

i have shot bushings in the rear and they make a high pitch squeal..

I have kind of the same problem....a MYSTERY click that even the boys @ Formula & Roadsport can't figure out. I've had all the aformentioned parts looked at.....except now the click has gone so far as to go off at every gear shift, every down shift, turns, and when just idling along (faintly though).

I'm thinking it's the CV or a ball joint...

I've had this on 3 out of my 14 cars... it's annoying as hell, and I never figured it out. Makes me weary of driving the car hard cuz I'm aways afraid the next turn is gonna break the wheel off LOL I'm sure it's something real simple... but I never kept the cars long enough to get around to doing it.

if it makes the noise while turning then it's more likely the right cv shaft.
Im just confused on why you changed all of these parts if the noise comes from the right side and only when turning

- new cat, w/ flex hose from header
- new intermediate pipe
- new left side (long) cv axle

the cat broke, the intermediate pipe broke (both the same weekend), and my left axle broke (about 1 month ago).. i wasnt fixing those parts in hopes of correcting the noise, lol..

do this .....

1) jack front of car off ground and stick on jack stands...

2) then remove keys from ignition and lock the wheel (move it till it clicks so that it can't move)

3) grap each wheel one hand at the top of the wheel and one hand at the bottom... you should not be able to pull top of wheel towards you while pushing bottom away as if trying to increase then decrease Camber in the tire manually (your shaking it)

ok step 4

hold the tire at the front and rear spots and shake the tire in the direction indicated (your not trying to turn the tire)

step 5

remember which steps seemed loose for each tire this is important (they shouldn't seem loose) there should be no play... here is whats wrong based on results

step 6:

if it's just top bottom play ... upper ball joint

if it's just front back play lower ball joint (I think)

and I forget what it could be if it's play in both directions ...

I bet its your brakes. Your pads are always touching the rotor,, and when your turning there is flex,,,, all I'm saying is that if its warped a bit, and the pads are low, what you're hearing is metal from the dead pad touching the rotor.

I have the same problem, but I'm upgrading brakes soon. I thought my balljoints or wheel bearings were gone as well.

gatherer, this is a regular test I perform cuz it's so quick... no play in any direction, no play in steering wheel, the click contunues.... I will change the guide pins in the calipers later... but I'm starting to think it's a dry axle for some reason.
