Adjusted timing to get 7HP is that safe????
Ok a friend of mine got his car dyno'd and the guy at the shop kept adjusting his distributor until the HP stopped going up. How safe is that??? Will he be runnig to lean or rich, how do we know??? on his dyno print out it has a air fuel ratio. whats a safe air fuel ratio, or whats the safiest ratio for maximum HP?? Its a 98 civic Si. thanks

air/fuel ratio should be at 13:1 ( I think could be wrong)
the distributer doesn't control fuel it controls spark...
and what he's probably done is adjust it so that the cylinder is making max pressure at TDC which is where most power is but it will wreck main bearings in the long run basically because your putting super loads on the crank and those loads arn't turning the engine
put a timing light on it I bet he advanced the timing a few degrees

13:1 is an ok mix..abit rich but good...anythign form 14.7 -13:1 is good....but ya if he is an experisenced tuner he wont' do to much harm...jsut run premium in there or you will detontate to ****...I'd say get your buddy to lay off her on really hot day's to avoid D16 failure..lol..if you dotn' knwo what the dude it doing then dotn' let him do it...yoru bud needs to know what is going on to his motor....and you can run a good A/f but if yoru timign is to advanced your motor will detontate and pistons and ring lands do not liek this stuff...hehehe
we have no way to tell you anything if the motor is safe cause we have no clue how advanced he put the timing yada yada...run premium and I'm 99% sure you wont' have an issue if the tuner is worth anything...

The stock setting on the distributor is optimized to ignite at a specific timing, right? This timing is engineered to provide maximum HP with long life to the engine, correct? So why does the act of adjusting the distributor based on dyno runs cause you to have to run higher octane fuel and colder sparks?
Wasn't the car designed for 87 with the distributor pre-optimized for max HP?

the guys lookin for a little bit of ponies. since when does the factory optimimize for max HP. they would barely even give you a warranty if that was the case. there is always a way to make more power. i would just be cautious as to how far the timimg was advanced. higher octane is better anyways.
