Code reader cannot communicate with ECU

I installed a '97 spec type-r into my ek hatch recently. I have a check engine light and I hooked up the code reader to the car but it is not able to communicate with the car. Anybody know why?

I think it's the JDM ITR ecu that came with the motor. It says P73 somewhere on it. Are there OBD compatibility issues with the JDM ecu?

bump

Does anybody have an idea why I'm having trouble connecting to my JDM 1997 Integra Type R ecu with the obd2 code reader?

why not just jump the service connector and find out what the code is by counting how many times the CEL flashes.

I did that and I'm able to get the code but that doesn't solve the problem as to why there's no communication between the obd2 code reader and the jdm p73 ecu. There is a problem present and I'd like to troubleshoot it.

Conversion harness?
What vin did you enter?
What reader is this?
Have you tried the reader in any other cars?

There's no conversion harness. I don't have to enter any vin to use the code reader. It's the Innova OBDII code reader. I've tried the reader in other cars and it works fine.

Dave @ Defcon Racing has told me that a JDM P73 ECU is essentially OBDI but with OBDII plugs. I'm not sure how that works because there's no reader here that can read something like that. So I'm wondering how the technicians in Japan read codes if that's the case.

the techs in japan have difference software/scanners there to read their ecu's. I've never tried scanning a jdm ecu but I guess what zeeman and dave said makes sense. Guess it wont work.
