York Police identify officer killed at traffic stop

link

A York Regional police officer has died after being trapped under a vehicle during a traffic stop east of Newmarket.

Const. Garrett Styles, 32, a seven-year veteran of the force died in hospital.

Police say Styles stopped a vehicle at Herald Rd. and Highway 48 in the town of East Gwillimbury at approximately 4:50 a.m.

They say the officer was struck by a vehicle and pinned underneath it.

He was taken to South Lake Regional Health Centre where he died of his injuries.

“It’s with deep regret that I advise you that a capable officer of the York Regional Police has succumbed to his injuries,” said Police Chief Eric Jolliffe in a brief statement this morning outside the hospital.

“(The family) very much appreciates that at this particular time, that you give them the space to deal with their loss,” he said.

Styles is survived by his wife, Melissa, and two small children. He joined the York Regional Police in December 2003 and became a constable in May 2004.

Thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family.

I live only a few km's from there... Scary. I wonder if the driver of the car that struck him was impaired?

^Cop stopped the mini van which was stolen (from parents?) at around 5am. Cop went to remove the keys from the ignition and kid (15 year old) hit the gas. Cop was pulled along. The driver lost control, pinned the cop underneith and that was that.

Guessing the minor wasn't complying and in an effort to protect the public he attempted to remove the guys from the ignition.
