Stupid Question

The parking brake should be holding the car in place, not the engine/tranny. Keep your foot on the clutch with the car in gear and running, set the parking brake, then turn the engine off and release the clutch. Ta-daaaa!
Leaving it in gear while parked should only be a backup to stop the car from rolling if the parking brake fails.

I did clutch -> parking brake -> forgot to turn off car released clutch -> and lets just say the turn off car took care of itself. fail

hey, sorry to revive an old(ish) thread...
i recently bought a civic, but when i try to park it in gear, and turn the engine off, i'm able to just pop the shifter in and out of gear without holding down the clutch. is it still effective? with my other cars, when it was parked in gear i couldn't move the shifter... so i don't know if it's really holding or not.

when the engine is off, if the car is parked on flat or ebrake is holding the car, you will be able to shift through gears without the clutch. just dont try that when engine is on.
and yes if you park up and pull ebrake...turn the car off you can put it in 1st and it will be just as affective as MPR described it.

whats the difference between ebrake and a parking brake?
As for forgetting about the ebrake. I think thats a horrible idea. Brakes are there to keep the car in place, I used parking brakes alone without putting it in gear. Unless I'm uphill or downhill.

It's the same thing, some people call it e-brake (emergency brake) or parking brake.

think whatever you want. doesn't make you right. same goes for me, it doesn't mean i'm right - but i offer the fact that auto cars park in gear by design. and fyi, brakes are there to stop the car.
