My question is if I park my car somewhere totally legal lets say a parking lot and some one hit me! Do I have to call the cups right away or what should I do so my insurance covers the costs! And as long as I pay my deductible would it affect my rates? Because when I talked to my agent last time she told me that they raise the rated depending on the number of claims you have. But wouldn't that count as a claim? And if I move to Vancouver would my rates still be high because I have had an accident in Ontario or they fallow totally different procedures?
Ok, if your car was parked and hit, it is classified as a hit and run, so you would have to call the cops immeditaly. Also, you would have ot pay your deductible, but your rates should not be affected - and yes your broker is right, if you have to many of these claims, your rates will increase. And yes it counts as a claim, but not an at fault claim, because obviously you were not in the vehicle. If you move to Vancouver, you would have to purchase government insurance as insurance in BC is all government run. I have no idea what they charge for premiums there, its a one time payment every year when you renew your plates and registration. Your accidents would most likely follow you for 6 years, then they are not allowed to be charged for (your rates) but they still exist on your record. This may vary from company to company

Welcome to TCC Insurance man. It's great to have someone like yourself on the board trying to help us out with insurance problems and questions.
Anyway I have a question, not sure if you can answer it or not. I had two tickets last year (2001) one in april and one in august. I brought the one in april to a guy I knew to have it fought in court and he did so in the summer. He said he fought it and he won and it should be off my record. I changed insurance companies in November and they found out about the tickets and my insurance wen't up $1000 a year due to it. The other ticket is going to be fought next month. The question is, even though I won in court, well thats what he says anyway I never wen't with him, will it still show on your records. Is there any point of even fighting these things anymore to avoid increased insurance rates?

Thanx a lot

Good question

If you get a ticket, and you decide to fight it AND win, it should not effect your insurance. If you ask your broker or agent to break down how your premium is charged, they should be able to tell you that you are being charged for tickets or accidents. Also, you can order a MVR (motor vehicle report) from the ministry of transport, for I believe $20 and it will show your history of tickets and accidents. This is the same report your insurance company uses to rate your policy, among other things. Hope this helps

They gave me a price for my insurance and then they called back and said they done some research and found out that I have 2 tickets and it increased $1000 per year.
Thanx for the reply in such a short period of time

it sounds like the person who fought for you in court never got the ticket wiped from your record. I'd get my own MVR from the ministry - you can order them online at www.mto.gov.on.ca

When you have a CIP, FCIP, CRM and I'm offering free advice, ya I am offended .... I'm just trying to help out so people know how insurance works ... the one thing I can't stand to hear is "insurance is a rip off" when the person has no clue what their talking about - i apologize for the remark, but i think my answers to the member questions are proof enough

Well I apreciate the advice I've recieved so far...,

gots me another question

how do I keep the insurance rate down while maximizing my coverage?

what don't I need that insurance companies sort of sneak in there that I pay for?

Well, the best way to lower your rates is to agree to a higher deductible. i've seen deductibles for person vehicles as high as $5000 for collision and comp - Although if you have a loss or yor vehicle is vandlaized you are responsible for the deductible portion - There insn't really ways insurance companies sneak in coverage, the rates applicable to the insured is the big reason your paying what your paying - Their are endorsements on every policy that you may not need, like rental coverage, glass coverage, stereo coverage , that sort of thing - You need at least $200,000 liability coverage in Ontario but most companies sell it at $1,000,000 - and a lot of people buy $2,000,000 just to be safe - speak with your broker and they caan break down how your policy is rated and what exactly your paying for
