A second battery is fine. A lot of the new volkswagens have the batteries in the trunk (the primary battery) so that saves wiring up amps through the firewall and stuff.

The older Civics have I believe 100 amp alternators while the new 7th gen civics only have a 50 amp alternator so careful with the new 7th gens when adding a second battery.. the generations before should be fine with the second battery!

nope, I wish they were 100amp, there a bit less like 60 or 70 amp on 5th gens.

so i shouldn't even upgrade the 5th gen alternator ? .. if its 60 or 70 wouldn't it be better if i get a 100 Amp one if and when i decide to get the second battery in the trunk??

you'll probably have to get the one you have rewound....the older models are reverse spinning...
they're available but cheaper in most cases getting yers spun..

unless you plan on kicking some intense amounts of power you should be alright with yer stock one..the only thing running yer system will be the optima and it's kinda like a marine battery..long run time 'til drop-off....

with regards to the approach of adding only the yellow top - would this put a lot of strain on the alternator when starting up if say a dvd deck and screen along with a decent sound sytem setup (2 12's running off a single amp)? my car doesnt have any ac or power features so could some of the load from the deck and devices be compensated by the fact that i dont have those extra features?

S.

I recently sold my SIR and now i have a jeep, Im putting in over 3000RMS so what do you guys think or my power supply? will it fry my ALT?

2 yellow tops, 1 underneath the hood and 1 in the trunk with a isolator to run the batteries seperate like u guys were talking about, and, something called at batcap which the guy said its like a 400 farad capacitor correct me if im wrong.

OH, and i hade about 1500wrms+ AND, ps2, tv, dvd player, and a laptop, 1 farad digi cap, hooked up in my civic and 1 yellow top was fine, i had slight dimming when the system was cranked up even while driving but always started. I play my stereo for hrs at a time in the summer when i play baseball and with the bass turned down a bit and the mids and highs cranked all the way i got a good 1.5-2.5 hrs of playing with the car off until I decided to start, sometimes i forgot and nothing ever happened.
