Please help! I'm confused!

Please help! I'm confused!
Bought a 97 civic hatch today, and sure enough tonight the check engine light came on. First of all I can't bring it back!
So I was seaching here and see stuff about the "Blue" plug. Does this apply to my car? Do I put something in there like a paperclip etc to jump it? Thats how you do it on my G2 Teg anyways! And the light is on the ECU is it?
Also do I count the long flashs as the first number and the short as the second?
Please let me know! I'm completly new to civics! Hope its nothing serious!!
