noise from rear pass drum

noise from rear pass drum

last night while driving, i noticed a loud scratching sound while breaking, coming from the rear pass drum..anyone know what needs to be replaced? also its stock drums in the back of my eg

, is it worth fixing or finding another drum? ive heard storys about the rear drums

what stories have you heard?? they are more reliable and less costly to maintain than disks... only downside is that they have less clamping power, which in the rear of the car isn't an issue anyways. If you don't race, just fix the damn things.

just heard that getting inside the drum was a bitch, last time i seen mine it was rusted to hell..well i guess ill bring it somewhere and get it looked at

getting in is easy ... there are 2 screw holes place long bolts in there and crank them down it'll push the drum off...

drums are great for racing too because you can set them to come on before the front causing the rears to lock and resulting in fun over steer... yep touchy brakes are fun I wear out rear shoes faster then the front pads ..... but I think thats because I've biased it too far to the back ...

They're not tough to get into. A couple of solid whacks of the hammeroonie usually gets them loose.

use the bolt hole to press the drumm off, its effortless....

well actually if you dont know who to remove a drum im assuming you dont know how to rebuild the internal parts, so take it somewhere to have new shoes installed.

you make a good point... however, sometimes all it takes is a little dedication and direction from a Haynes manual, and any shmuck can turn into a backyard mechanic. I wonder if he'd have the intuition to adjust them properly though

well it involves a complete tear down and rebuild, all u need is a scredriver, pliers(visegrip needle nose are clutch for this job) bolts and a ratchet fro drum removal, side cutters for the ebrake cable removal(for retracting the spring, not cutting anything) a jack of course, brake cleaner, backing plate greese, new shoes, new drums if u want, or have them machined, or just sand them down if they check out ok, and some instructions with alittle bit of patiance and a day off work...

It looks like a giant puzzle at first, but when you break it down its quite simple. Just be carefull not to ruin the cyclender by pressing on the piston.

Do 5th gens have an auto adjuster? (doesnt mean u dont have to adjust them initially) but they make up for any looseness, as long as the drum spins freely when u put it back on....

good luck with the search... but instead of spending 2 hours searching, why not spend 20 minutes to run down to the Walmart and grab a Chilton manual that will save your *** 100 times over, and you'll always have it for reference. Esp just starting out with mechanics, it'll be such a great tool to learn from. I've read manuals up and down... I don't need them as much anymore, but there are still things I can use to refer to them - like wiring diagrams. I'm thinking about buying a Honda factory service manual next so I can copy exactly their circuits for power windows, locks, and so on...

My main use of it is torque specs... its got evey bolt on the car
