newbie

hello. this is my first time posting on this forum. i currently drive a 1994 325is and am a member at maxbimmer and moderate at bmw-forums. but i did at one time own a 1992 honda civic ex, which i gave to my sister when buying the new car. however in the last few years my sister has failed to keep my old baby in any other condidtion than good. i decided to join this board to learn more about civics because both my sisters own one.
anyways the story goes that my old car is gonna need some serious work , she has 470,000 on her had an engine swap to an SI at around 400,000, suspension is like mush now and the clutch is going pretty quicky etc, etc, etc,
anyways ill shut up. just wanted to give a little intro before i get someone asking why the hell a bmw is on this forum. thanks again and i will help where i can .
Mark

Hey Mark,

If you ever come to a meet, don't let BOND007 touch you in inappropriate places LOL j/k enjoy yourself

Now about your cars... that's serious mileage. I respect your desire to want to keep it going. First of all, determine how bad the body rot is. Good place to start looking is behind the rear wheels. Make sure the car is pretty solid. Then, determine how you want the car to feel. You want it to feel like new again... then look for a whole new bushing kit like the one from Energy Susp. Replace all the bushings, then change your shocks to something more reasonable. If you are on a budget, and the car is just a driver (not lowered) then get KYB GR2 and put it together with some stock springs (but not your own cuz of the mileage). The brakes, you can pick up cheap calipers from someone and a master cylinder cuz a lot of ppl upgrade (well at least I did, so I got lots of left over parts). Use Honda OEM parts wherever possible, even if they come from the junkyard or here in the classifieds. Those two little things will make a big difference in how the car drives. I imagine the ball joints and tie rods (whole steering rack actually) could use a freshening as well.

I think the first place to start are the floors, we don't want your sister flying out of the car on the highway buckled up to her seat If they're bad then get a body shop to weld some medal down there to reinforce a strong chassis to the car then get it oil sprayed. Then bb's suggestions are great to follow threw..

oh btw welcome to tcc

Welcome, I am afraid I cannot provide too much of Civic knowledge, but I would just say 470K is a respectable mileage.

Enjoy your stay

that's insane eh, 470,000km

honestly though, it's best if you just bought another Civic in better condition that case, you'd probably spend much more than you desire trying to repair your old one.

just my opinion though

Welcome to the Club!

470 K is awesome, how long does she plan to keep the car for?

Unhappy

hey come on, my friend has 320,000km on his 99si and he plans to use it to 400,000 by next year. It can't be that bad can it? I'm on the road to 400,000 before engine change.

thanks guys. i feel welcomed.
the car is still running fine, i think its gonna need a serious tune up but beyond that the body is in pretty good shape the notorious rear quarter pannel clip has rotted out. but i think i will replace that whole thing, those rear ends are cheap to find if you look in the right places. the foor is/or should be in good shape, the car has been rust proofed nearly every year maybe excluding the first few. a few dents in the front quarter pannel and a little surface rust around the gas tank. all in all shes still in impressive shape considering the milage on her.
I took her out for a nice spirited drive yesterday , took the baffle out of the exhaust and let that ***** growl. (still a crazy loud car IMO)
also i dunno how long were gonna keep the car. its basically my sisters call, either she buys a new car (no job) or stays with what she has. i plan to do all the work myself on this car

once again thanks for the advice and i think i will learn a lot about these cars from you guys.

I don't think learning honda's would be as hard as say a........Bimmer? lol

Those german engineers
Everything looks so complicated in a VW/BMW/AUDI/BENZ

ya bimmers are quite different than hondas but an engine is an engine, and suspension is suspension etc etc. weather its an inline 6 or a v-4 the fundamentals are pretty much the same, some minor differences and of course different car manufactures have there own quirky things. i love my bimmer , comming from a honda family (mom-98' accord ex-v6 with skirt package, sister-95 civic DX, and of course my other sister with my old 92- civic) i can very well appreciate honda and what is possible with these cars. i just wish that performance mods were a little more affordable for BMW's as they are for hondas. hehhe
