idle surging on cold start

hello all,

i am visiting my sister who drives a '98 civic lx. on a cold start the idle initially starts where it should. as it warms up, the idle starts to drop and then shoots back up again. it continues to do this over and over.

i have read a number of different fixes for this problem but they are all related to older vehicles. could anyone suggest a fix for a '98?

or perhaps you could go to my place, grab my haynes manual and bring it down to me here in north carolina.

thanks guys

Usually it's the IACV, swap it with a friend, see if it fixes it. Or take it out and clean it the best you can. Some people haven't had success with doing this, but I have a few times.

the iavc, what exactly is that and where can it be found? like i said i don't have my haynes manual OR any friends down here. i am in north carolina visiting my sister.

i will check the coolant situation though. how is it that the coolant could have something to do with this problem?

air bubbles could be rushing passed the temp sensor causing it to send mixed signals quickly affecting idle. And with low coolant the iac won't function properly.

Anyways.. its located at the back of your intake manifold to the passenger side of the brake boost nipple. Held on my two 12mm has a harness clip going to it. It's the only thing bolted to the back of your intake manifold..

on an LX, it's on the bottom of the throttle body with two coolant lines going to it.
