idle surging

1996 Civic CX hatch w/ new fuel filter, cap, rotor, plugs all about 9000 kms ago

my idle surges... most of the time its at 800-900 where it belongs... but when you let it idle for 10-15 seconds or longer, it seems like its searching for an idle speed to stay at... it only revs about 100 rpms each way (700-1000) but its very annoying...

does anyone know what the problem is?

oh ya... my car smells like rotten eggs when i drive the **** outta it.. its got a 2 month old high flo cat on it and i was told it might smell for a long while? 4-6 months... anyone??

another thing.. my car is over fueled... black clouds(not blue) when i rev the hell outta it... i was told its o2 sensor problems, but at 300 bucks a peice, i really dont wanna swap em out... any other things that may control this??

thanks a bunch guys

Travis

your exhaust manifold my be cracked. It more than likely cracked around the O2 bung causing the sensor to foul...if you still got the stock manifold with cat hangin off where the downpipe should be thats probably what it is. my 97 did the same thing, dealer has extended warranty on that up til 180,000km I think so if you're under they'll replace the manifold and O2 as well all for FREEEEE...

check it out...

its not vtec, its vteck, why can't anyone get it right....

I think lucky star has em, they're like $20,000 with the subframe and safety spoiler for your hatchbacks trunk

hahahahaha @ ad_rock82. you tell 'um boiiiiii

saying vtech or vteck would normally get a person banned, but I'm trying to be nice lately. cuz if you can't get that right... I have a hard time believing you'd get much else right.

my car has similar problems
everytime i start my car it idles at 2000 rpm
then after a minute it will start jumping from 1000-2000 rpm then after a while it will stay at 1500 till i move the car

why is it doing this?

vacuum leak maybe in that case. usually the cracked manifold will make the idle bog erratically. if it's idling erratically to that extent (+/-1000rpm) then it's probably a vacuum leak...

hey i have a similiar problem..can someone gimme some advice? recently my car started idling high 2000 rpm or 1500rpm. it normally used to idle @1000 like most cars... and when it finally decides to idle @ 1000 or sometimes just bellow(say around 800-900)..it's running run like if it's going to cut out....and then too sometimes when it's @ 1000 and i clutch in, it goes up to like 2000 and if i rev it drops back to 1500 sometimes. what can this be? by the way i've not hijacking ur post..

its not a vac line... not like 1000-2000 then back to 1000.. i know how that sounds... this is prolly just a sensor that controls the idle... i dont know much about the various sensors so if someone can show me a pic of the sensors that may control idle speed, id be happy... thanks

IACV - Idle Air Control Valve.

Unbolt it (believe it's 2 10mm. it's behind your intake manifold)
-shoot some brake cleaner in it (the screen needs to be cleaned as well), you'll see lots of carbon build-up pour out of it.

Make sure you tighten it back on properly... If not, coolant would leak out of it, and your cold start idle would be around 500rpm.

Check vacuum lines, if you have really worn out pieces of **** tubes, just replace em.

*My hopefully worthy cents.

This is what the IACV looks like:

This is how to fix the FITV. Look at the pics and it will help you out on where the FITV is and what to do to fix it.

Hope this helps.

my 92 hatch has the same problem too
i got a new stock header, new o2sensor, new rotors, new caps, new ignitor, new spark plugs, when i bring in my car to the auto shop to safetied and emission

during cold start, its at 1500-2000rpm (i suppose its normal) because it goes down to 700-900 when its warmed up... then when i drive it... when i come to a stop.. no matter if i'm in gear 1 or neutral, the idling jumps between 800-1200 (up and down) after i idle for like 10+ secs. there were a few times my car was idling at 1100 at neutral too (the car was warm)
