make sure you clean the old gasket off of there, maybe clean the carbon off your valves, valve adjustment never hurt anyone either
check your timing belt out . .. get the whole top end kit, comes wit hodd little seals here and there !!!

first cleaning your valves means get a valve job done and the resurface the head min maybe .003". cleanliness is next to godliness so make sure everything is free of dirt and oil. clean out the stud holes very well and make sure you are very generous with the supplied moly lube on the threads and make sure you get some on both side of the washer. they need to be torqued to 70ft/lbs if i remmber correctly. yes a valve adjustment is neccessary if it is being taken appart. you deffinetly dont want exessive clearance or the rocker will bang the crap out of the valve stems then have fun getting them out hwn they are all mushroomed. also exessive clearance can cause a loss of power. if you are turboing the car do the head right.

head resurfacing costs about $40-70 and can be done at any automotive machine shop.
And a valve job costs anywhere between $90-350 depending on what exactly is done...$90 would get you the valve seats cut and the valves faced, no install, no resurface. While $265 through Gord Bush gets you the valve seats cut, valves faced, springs and retainers installed back in the head and a resurfacing, any parts are extra (valve seals or guides).
I would honestly recommend replacing the valve seals while you were at it, if you're going to get a valve job done you might as well give the head a once-over and make everything fresh and ready for some abuse. If your going to do it, might as well do it right the first time. Spend the little extra money and get it done right.
