good read on synthetic oils!
Hey,
I found this on Toronto Prelude club, thought it might interest some of you synthetic non belivers... Honestly I never gave synthetic oil the time or day, just didnt give a **** about spending extra money on it... But now im starting to think about it after reading that blurb on it... Ill probably wait and use it in my next engine, unless somone can convince me its worth switching over to it on this engine (190,000km)...
well here it is, its a bit of a long read, but worth it if you have doubts about using it...synthetic oil (long read)

Good read! Ummm i started using the mobil1 synthetic motor oil around the beginning of the summer. Actually I didn't even really realize how much smooter at first my car ran until my girlfriend made the comment about it when we were on the highway. Then I really started to notice the difference... I also find that the car has a bit more "go" aswell...
The only thing that I find frusterating about synthetics are which companies really put out synthetics. I know amsoil etc are the really expensive well known syntheic oils but depending on who you talk to and how you interpret everything I'm still uncertain is Mobil1 is... ppl on this site claim no (yes I've read all the posts) but reading their website sorta indicates differently. The other thing is how long before changing the synthetic oils is also unclear. Some claim 10,000+ km some claim 20,000+ km etc... I wish there were clear cut answers and everyone was on the same page...

Actually, I've been using the recommended 5W20 oil so far. 5W20 is synthetic based, however I intend on switching to 5W30 full synthetic once it has higher mileage. I use Quaker State right now, but when I make the switch, I'll probably go with Mobil 1.

Does it appear to be still clean or dirty?
Synthetic oil may last long, but the oil filters still fill up with dirt and other contaminants. At which point, the oil bypasses the filter and the dirt and contaminants go throughout the motor continously until the oil & filter are changed again.

i usually change oil around 3000-4000 kms give or take... i like the oil coming out to look like it could still be used.... make me feel better about the life of my engine... and since i'm nearing 300 000 kms i'd say its a good investment.... i use 5w30 mobil 1 also

Good point about the filter...never thought of that

You should still change your oil every 5000km regardless of synthetic or not. stick to the mainentance schedule. As someone mentioned the filter still needs to be changed every 5000km. The oil will still get dirty. If you only change it every 10000km then there's no benefit...you'd be better off running regular oil and changing it every 3500km.
As for filters, stick with premium filters such as Wix and Napa Gold.

I thought it was ok to use **** like amZoil (yes thats with a Z not an S) and redline for like 15,000km cuz they are really made for racing and regular street driving doesn't kill the oil...my friend uses amZoil in his mkII gti and he says after 15,000km the oil still isnt really dirty.

Personally I haven't used Amsoil, but to each, his own... some choose the safe, rather than sorry route... some take risks and sometimes learn the hard way.
My advice... if you care about your motor, change the oil more frequently and avoid the costly expense of repair/replacement.
btw, regular street or city driving (especially in a city like Hamilton) can be worse for your motor/oil than strictly highway driving or racing.
also, it is Amsoil. http://www.amsoil.com/

The benefit to cartridge filters is that there's no metal casing, so it's better for the environment... less waste or recycling required. The other bonus is that it's easier to change a cartridge filter over a spin-on filter in some cases. BMW has an extremely simple set up on some of their models.

My 92 civic Si VTEC uses Mobil 1 15W50 for engine and Mobil 1 10W30 for tranny.
Let's just say that when I got the car it was using non-synthetic (stock) oil. After I did the oil change to 15W50, the "rattling" of the engine was gone and it revved up faster like as if it got a lighter flywheel.
Also it is a good idea to get your valves adjusted ($60 at kingsway Motorsport).
