engine compatibility with my dx

hi guys.....
i drive a 92 honda civic sedan with a dx engine setup

if i just want to swap the engine, what other engines would just drop right in?
i just want to buy an engine cuz i full swap is too expensive for me now....
i just want an engine that will work fine with my present tranny and ecu
anyone got any suggestions??
i want more power but just don't want to do a full swap...
by the way, will an si engine work with my tranny and ecu?

oh ya...i'm an automatic

D16Z6 or D16Y8 longblock... you'll need some wiring modifications done and the auto D16Z6 ECU. Swapping in any other series motor would require a new tranny, axles, etc.etc.

Is your car standard or auto...

B series will fit...

Higher D series will fit..

You will need the new ECU as well...

D16Z6 is from the 92-95 Civic Si's and 92 Civic Ex-v's. 125hp and 102 lbs/ft tq.

D16Y8 is from the 96-00 Civic Si's and 96-00 Acura 1.6 EL's. 127hp and 107 lbs/ft tq.

I heard that going from a non-vtech to a vtech motor, the wiring is expensive and tricky.

depending on how much the motor is, b/c it is always defferent. the labour is about $500 - $800, only if the motor fits exactly with no mods.

I figuring from you post you have know idea what you want or how much you want to spend, so its a little harder for us to give a response.

Whats your idea of budget?
What results do you want from this motor swap?
What is the application of your car?
Do you want to switch from auto to manual?

Pick up the phone, call the shops in the affliliate section.
Have an idea of how much you want to spend, then you won't have to worry about so many choices.

If you feel like doing a little research...
For all practical purposes any D-series or any-B series motor will fit in your car without the aid of special mounts.

You can identify which series of motor, as denoted by the first letter in the engine code, the code is stamped on the block.

because i'm nice guy, heres a good place to start

actually, i just wanted to do a swap without changing the transmission or ecu
i want to just drop the ENGINE (only) into my car using the stuff i already have
i was just wondering if the si engine or the b16a will work?
or will i have to buy everything (tranny ecu, wiring etc)
cuz my shop at school can do it, my teacher is a licenced mechanic and he is will to do it for me.
my budget would be around 1000
which engine could i buy with that?

In order to use your original tranny, you can only get a D series motor (ie. D16Z6, D16Y8, etc.). None of the B series motors will work with your existing tranny. You will have to get the complete motor (no tranny), ecu, and there will be extra wiring. You should be able to find all of this used for under $1000.

D16Y8 is the newer engine of the two and has slightly better power (127 hp vs. 125 hp and 107 lbs/ft vs. 102 lbs/ft). The D16Y8 is also OBDII as opposed to the D16Z6 which is OBDI, meaning the D16Y8 will require more wiring depending on what car it is going into. Based on the fact that the D16Y8 is the newer of the two, it will likely cost more than the D16Z6.
