a shock is what you have (unless I got this all backwards in my head)

a Strut turns with the steering input like a macpherson strut suspension design a shock does not turn with steering input like the double wishbone design

i always thought strut was when the shock has a spring mount attatched and a shock was spring and shock completely separate.

A strut mounts to the front or rear knuckle on the bottom and on the top mounts to the body of the car somehow, lots of different mounting variations. Usually having two large bolts holding it on. A shock mounts to a control arm upper and lower. Also in the front the strutt holds the spring and turns the car.

MY SiR already cleared this up once:
A strut is a damper that has the bottom "cup" for the coil spring to attach to.

A damper is just the damper with the spring being mounted somewhere else on the car's suspension.

Also, damper = shock absorber (which we usually just use the word "shock").
