clutch gone??? or air in the lines
ok... so for the past 2 months or so i have been trying to figure out my tranny as it is difficult to shift sometimes... and the clutch is a little weird sometimes... occassionally when i i park the car for a few days or sometimes out in the heat... my clutch engage point feels and is different than it usually is.
sometimes it feels as if it engages just at the tip of the clutch pedal travel and 95% of the rest of the time it engages about halfway of the travel.
i noticed today that driving home from work, it was engaging right at the tip of the pedal travel and all my gears just shiftet like butter... nice and smooth.
when itts the other way which is most of the time, it just shifts alright, no grinds or anything, but just more rough than usual... could this be air in the lines or is this an indication the clutch is gone... its just weird because it has soo much travel int he pedal. any suggestions would be great and also if anyone knows how to bleed the clutch line if they can offer a few suggestions that would be great.

slave cyl. is located right infront of the cooling fan. Get someone in the car to pump the clutch pedal a few times.. get them to hold it down and get a 8mm wrench and crack the bleeder screw open untill fluid spits out. Do it a few times untill its a steady flow of fluid and there is no "pop". The pop is air in the lines.
how old is your clutch? sometimes a worn clutch can create higher engagement points. Try bleeding the line see if it helps 1st

its a clutch from a 2000 or maybe 2001 gsr... so not too old...
its in an ek, so i don't know if that makes a difference as to where the slave cylinder is located. i am not too sure what i am looking for... does it have a resevoir?

its connected to an L shaped rubber boot. You'll see a nipple with a rubber boot (sometimes people don't put on the boot) facing towards your header. That nipple/screw is what you need to open up while the system is pressurized

ok... thats exactly what i thought it was... the name just kind of throws me off because i am looking for a big cylinder with a resevoir or something attached closely to it...
so you mean the screw right at the tip is the one i'll open... perfect... we'll try that out tomorrow and see what happens.

ok... i figured that's what it was... the question being, will i need to top off my clutch fluid after bleeding it? i would like to do it tonight, but honda parts is closed now in case i need to pick some more up.

is that the same as what honda uses? i just don't really want to mix two types of fluid. and isn't dot 3 brake fluid used for cars usually with abs in them? i have no abs... if that makes a difference.

ok, so i bled the clutch a little, i don't know, but there seemed to be a little air, but we bled it a bit and didn't top it off for a couple times and then i think we got some air in the lines, but we got it all out... so far, the clutch hasn't been acting funny like that, but its still not perfect...
any other ways to tell if the clutch is bad? i mean, it has lots of travel left in it.. doesn't feel close to the floor or anything, but i was just thinking it could be worn out and not as effective.

The higher your clutch pedal goes before engaging, the more worn out it is..
Clutch bleeding is good. You should replace the fuild altogether.. People don't realize that clutch and brake fluid should be totally clear, not that nasty dark brown crap. You almost shouldn't be able to tell there is fuild in the resivoir.

well, when i was bleeding it out... i kept adding more and more until it started to come out clear... but there is some dirt or what looks like black powder floating arouind in the resevoir... very little, but it looks a bit dirty...

There is a special fluid you are supposed to use to flush the systems. Can't remember what it is.. You flush the same way you bleed, but until all the fluid is out.
Then you fill fuild and bleed like normal. Half bottle is more than enough. Clutch line is fairly short. DOT 3 fuild.
AS I mentioned in my other post, 1 bottle from crappy tire. $8.99 was more than enough to bleed my brakes and my clutch.
