Clutch going maybe?

Hi,

Nothing special with my car, just a regular Honda Civic EX.

Last few months, been having an intermitant problem with the car, where I would be accelerating from a full stop (like, after backing out of the driveway, say) but before leaving first gear (before I've even released the clutch all the way even), I would hear this screeching noise (nah, not the tires ) coming from the engine compartment. It sounds as if a belt or something is slipping or something rubbing. The car also doesn't seem accelerate while this happens. If I push on the clutch again and re-try, the car will accelerate fine, no noise or anything. This has only happened in first gear (the noise), never in any other gear, and it only happens once in a while. My theory is the clutch is starting to go (which would make sense), but just wanna hear what people here have to say about it.

If it is the clutch (which even if it isn't, I probably should think of replacing anyway), what do people recommend I go with (not racing or anything). I see the Exedy clutches on E-Bay, but worried because the price difference is so great compared to what I see elsewhere. Like, $100 US for a clutch kit compared to other places where its as much as $300 for the kit.

Thanks for any and all help!

Not that I know anything, but it sounds like if you were thinking of replacing the clutch anyway, you should do it right away. Then see if the problem still occurs, in which case you should get it checked out cause if it is a belt of some sort (especially a timing belt), it could result in engine damage. Hope replacing the clutch solves the problem. Good luck.

Thanks guys. I replaced the timing belt about 4 weeks ago, and the problem still occurs, which leads me to believe it was the clutch. But it seems your right. If I was going to, I should anyway and see what happens. Looks like Exedy it is. I know someone who can get me Honda parts at cost, and its still $400 for a Honda clutch. For the age and mileage on my car, that just isn't worth it for me.

One more odd ball problem I've been having is that there is this big amount of heat (sometimes, not all the time, and no, not only on hot days...happened in the winter, though not as often) coming out of where my parking brake is. This (it occurs to me) only SEEMED to have started when my compressor for my AC went kaput and was bypassed (damn thing seized my engine). Does this make sense to have happen after a bypassed compressor? Could it be anything else?

Thanks again folks!

Same thing was happening to Catonagod's 98 Si, I forget what they said it was, I'll ask him.

lol, no diagnosis eh, just parts replacing. Track down the problem first, then fix the problem...........

Well, no...not just parts replacing for no good reason. The timing belt was due as it was (I was on to about 100,000km with my timing belt) and the clutch needs replacing anyway, especially at 190,000km. I can already feel some problems with it that I have not described here, because people have already told me its a clutch problem. However, the two problems I have described in this thread are the ones that are stumping me the most.

Exhaust leak is possible I suppose for my heat problem. I should get it checked out by the mechanic. Its frustrating though, because as soon as I am going to do that, it doesn't happen at all. Take the drive I had tonight. No heat whatsoever coming out of the parking brake area. However, on Friday night, it definately was there. I also didn't think that a leak would be intermittant in nature...could it?
