first of all you will need to take the wheels off and put the car on jackstands.....unless you have to remove the axle nuts by hand (without the use of an impact gun) in which case remove the ceter cap of your wheels (if equipped) and remove the axle nuts with the wheels on and the car on the ground. This will require the use of a 32mm socket, breaker bar and some sort of bigger bar to put over the breaker bar to get more torque on it, it can be done as i have done it this way a few times.
If you are removing both axles to pull the engine/tranny first drain the tranny fluid so it doesn't spill out everywhere, but if you are just removing 1 axle to replace it, then just jack up the one side of the car that you are working on, so all of the tranny fluid doesn't leak out as you remove the axle.
Then remove the 14mm bolt that holds the damper fork to the shock.
Now remove the 17mm bolt and nut that holds the damper fork to the lower control arm and remove the damper fork.
Then remove the 17mm castle nut on the bottom of the balljoint and separate the balljoint. A method i use is hammering on the LCA right where the balljoint goes through it, there is a little tab on the LCA....this is where to hit, NOT THE STUD!!!
Once the balljoint is separated remove the axle from the hub, sometimes its necessary to hit the end of the axle with a hammer to get it to come out of the hub.
Then swing the hub out of the way, support the axle b/c you don't want it to bend too much b/c you might ruin the cv joint.
This step is only for working on the drivers side with an intermediate shaft
Remove the 3 14mm (or maybe 15mm) bolts that hold the hanger bearing assembly of the intermediate shaft to the back of the engine block, this might require some patience b/c they are kind of a PITA to reach. If you are pulling the engine/tranny you can leave the intermediate shaft attached to the tranny (and skip that last step) but remove the axle from the intermediate shaft in the same manner as described in the next step.
Then remove the axle from the transmission. Do this by prying with a pry bar or a big strong screwdriver between the axle and tranny, i find this works best when you stick the pry bar in between the axle and tranny and push away from the tranny, it will pop loose and voila....repeat these steps on for the other side.
