5W20 or 5W30

My dad just bought a 2001 accord and it says 5W20 on the cap. Is there any harm in putting 5W30 Mobil one?

use mobile 0w20 for that application...thats what it even says on the bottle (use on engines sprcifying 5w20)...5w30 will work fine aswell...its just a tad more viscous

use only 5W20 as reccomended by Honda...it will give you the best fuel economy and power.....there is no harm in using 5W30, just a slight increase in fuel economy.

prolly not, except that it'll take longer to circulate the oil on those cold morning starts, so the cam bearings will see much higher wear than usual.

but what's the big deal man?? you wanna get a quantity discount by buying the same oil for yourself and your old man? way to save a few pennies

Honda went to 5W20 and 0W20 in their cars to improve emissions and fuel economy, but I'm sure oil pumps and seals were reworked for the thinner oil. also 5W30 will raise pressure on all seals, so leaks are more likely.

haha... really??! Honestly, because Mobil is really easy to come by, like Walmart, CT... I say just buy oil as you need it. Unless it's a really rare oil like Mobil Delvac synth or Shell RotellaT synth it's just not worth stockpiling.

But now that CT carries Amsoil I'm switching to that from now on.

to me there are two levels of 'fully' synthetic oils. The 1st, crappier group, Mobil1 leads the way. This crappier group is cheap and readily available on demand.

the second group includes high end synth oils from Redline, Amsoil, Motul, Royal Purlpe, ... and I'm sure I'm forgetting others. Out of these, Amsoil is certainly the most readily available... as for which is the best, it's hard to say cuz they're all sooooo good. But being the most readily available, I say Amsoil is the best

Redline was on sale 30% off at Canadian Tire a few weeks ago... since I got a PST exempt number, the final price I paid for a bottle (1 quart) was like $9.50!!!!

I use amsoil in my car. I'm using 5w20, and no problems so far. I have read test where people use amsoil vs. Mobil 1. They got pretty much the same results for both oils. I even if you look at amsoil's website, it shows that it is slightly better than mobil 1 by a bit.

Its a very marginal difference between amsoil and mobil 1. Mobil 1 is not crap, but nor is amsoil. They are both good fully synthetic oils.

I would buy mobil 1 from walmart or crappy tire, but I get amsoil for like $5 dollars a bottle, so I'm not going to spend more on mobil 1. Plus its hard finding 5w20 fully synthetic oil.
