5w20 and 5w30
Hello Im about to go for a oil change and i was just wondering if anybody knew the difference between the two. I know the 5w stands for thickness but whats the 20 or 30 for? I didnt wanna take my car to a honda dealer cuz its just overpriced and the wait just sucks, so was thinking of takeing it to a firestone near my place where my friend works but they only carry the 30. thanks ahead for replys.

even my nonno said it best when a mechanic told him he put 5w30 in his car and said it didn't matter, he said "well its the other number for a reason, so take w/e **** u put in my car out and re-do it with the right one" lol
You mine as well. If the only have 30, go to an auto store and buy 4 bottles of oil before hand and let the take care of the filter and changing it, call ahead tho and ask how much it would be.
The same kinda thing happened with me a few weeks back so i said screw it and did it myself. Bought the right oil and w/e kind i wanted, a filter, and I now know that it was done right.
Doesn't take long either.

The low-temperature viscosity (5W in a 5W-30 oil) indicates how quickly engines crank in winter and how well the oil will flow to lubricate critical engine parts at low temperature. Honda uses a 5w because of our colder climate.
The high-temperature viscosity (30 in a 5W-30 oil) provides thickness, or body, for good lubrication at operating temperatures.
Refer to your owner's manual.

Oil change is almost an area you do not need to compare prices with, even a local garage nowadays will charge anywhere from 25 to 30. Unless you do it your self (and even then, it might be more expensive, but you do it because you like to work on your car), I say just take it to Honda and let them worry about what goes into your engine.

if you look in your owners manual it says if 5w20 is unavailable it's ok to use 5w30. the difference is more to do with fuel economy. honda takes this even further with thier hybrids and even reduces the 5w20 down to 0w20. lots of car companies have gone to 5w20 now, mazda, ford, chrysadese, etc. I work at the crappy tire down at east mall and queens way, we get so many cars needing 5w20 now we dropped our bulk penzoil 10w30 for quaker 5w20. somethimes they sur charge $5 to your $26 oil change but if the person who wrote up your work order doesn't know what your car takes and just writes it up for the usual 5w30 then the guy doing the oil change (myself included) does know. we'll put the bulk 5w20 in and we don't care enough to waste our time finding the customer just to say "there's a $5 sur charge blah blah blah".

i run Moble1 5w30 fully synthetic with a shot of Lucus oil stabilizer&fram oil filter. winter-summer whatever my civic loves it even on cold starts! my oil changes cost 37+tax for oil&filter Lucus 12$ but will last awhile cuz you just need a shotglass or two!! if you pour this mixure of moble1&lucus out right your 3rd oil change is free with the left overs +a new filter
