Temperature problem on my EG
Hey guys I got a little problem which I'm trying to troubleshoot and can use some advice and opinions. First of all my EG runs fine and until recently I had no problems with car temperature at all until the cold weather really hit us within these past couple weeks. It seems like on days when it drops to about -5 (and below) my engine only heats up to about 1/4 on the temp gauge which in turn doesn't really generate enough heat to warm up the car (so I freeze my *** off). Taking the car on the highway and driving at constant speeds will allow the car to heat up to just below 1/2 on the gauge, which is normal operating temp (from my experience) but the minutre i pull of the highway and get back to regular stop and go driving the temp falls back down again. I had this problem last year as well and never had it resolved, but i can't deal with it again this year.
I've already tried two thermostats and the one in there now is a 190 degree (high temp), so thats not the issue. My thoughts are.... my aluminum rad is slightly bigger than my stock rad and because aluminum rads are more efficient and the slight larger in size; I think it might be taking too much heat away from the engine. Anyone think this is probable? Its the only thing I can think of since when the temps are higher than -5 my car heats up just fine and feels like a sauna when i crank the heat.
This blows...

sounds like there may be a problem with something other then just the rad but try putting a piece of cardboard in front of the rad between it and the front re-bar to see if that helps, if so it's prolly the rad

Regarding your issue:
When was the last time the coolant was replaced? If it was a while ago, it wouldn't hurt to flush it.
Another thing, EGs weren't exactly the greatest cars for producing heat and with your rad, it could just make it that much worse and that's just the way it is. The fix? Well, as ol Dusty has posted, a piece of cardboard is your friend. If you leave it there for the Winter, it shouldn't cause any problems, just remember to take it out in the Spring....actually, we live in Canada so, the cardboard will only really cause problems in the Summer (but still, take it out in the Spring).
Hope this Helps.

Will try the cardboard in front of the rad. Doubt it'll help though because even sitting 25mins at idle the temp gauge sits really low. Coolant is like 6 months old. Could improper coolant mixture or not using distilled water cause a problem? As long as the coolant doesn't freeze it should heat up just fine right?

Doesn't this just send info to the temp gauge on the dash? Can this really affect how hot my coolant is getting?

had this identical problem, just fixed it.... .first i changed the thermostat... didn't fix anything, all i did after that to fix it was bleed all the air out of the system reaaaaaaallllllly good, now the car heats up like a champ!

Your engine is being over cooled most likely from the extremely cold air when driving and the larger radiator. Do you keep your heat on setting 3-4 when this happens? I had this issue once and it was so cold that with my heat on full at operating temps the car would actually get colder as I was driving on the highway.
Putting a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator block some of the air will help out your problem.

I have a 2" aluminum rad in my EG and normal operating temp is just below half.
Drain all the old coolant, and replace it with a 50/50 mix of new coolant, run the car for a while with the rad cap off to let all the air out. Your problem should be solved.
