does it do it all the time? Most common problem is thermostat.

Check your lower rad hose at operating temperature. If it's cool or not really hot then your therm is stuck closed

To be safe for now untill you find out what is actually wrong, you can blast your heater witch will draw some heat away from the motor shoudl bring the IATs down. But like BB said you dont want to deal with a Blown HG trust me on that one.

Check for coolant loss. Either by leak, or burning. Coolant has a sweet smell. Keep us updated

blasting the heat will bring the ECTs (engine coolant temperature) down not the IATs (intake air temperature).
Could be air trapped in your cooling system.

beat me to it zeepos

As soon as the temp. gauge rises to 3/4 way you should shut the engine off. You definately do NOT want to overheat it.

Perhaps start with radiator bleeding first?

does the fan come on? if so check stat, bleed sys, it could be something simple as coolant mix make sure coolant and H2o mix is correct. most antifreeze jugs have a temp/ mix chart on the label.
