swap problems

recently swaped a b16a into my 97 civic coupe and its basically running ****ty
1) weird idle problem sitting still revs to 1500 then drops down to 800
2) vtec kicks in a 5000 then at 5700 to 6000 almost sounds like its kicking in and out of vtec chugs kinda
3) backfires like mad if i let off in any gear past 3500 rpm

make sure to bleed the cooling system properly, there could be an air bubble in your cooling system causing it to idle crappy.

Which ECU are you using?

Without more info, it'll be pretty hard to diagnose the problem over the internet.

no smart asses on here...lol.

Just to clarify, you have to give as much info as possible about the model of car, year, engine, mods and other pertinent information to have the best chance of getting useful info when making a post about your car on the forums.
