hey! one big super noob here trying to learn a bit more about engines

i was just wondering within the entire forum i have read countless times of swapping parts off of different b series engines and using them for other.
for example i just read some1 elses thread saying how he can use GSR cams on b16a2 or w/e blah blah.

i was just wondering what are the distinct differences other than the power difference and displacement. And why is it that the parts can be interchanged so easily?

o and also ahha sorry bout so many questions. but what would be the best engine to start off with in terms of tuning =D
