D series swap
hey fellow TCC members,
over the summer i wanted to swap out my d15 for a d15Z or a d16z6.
is there any special tools that i would require (such as a torque wrench...) and would i need a hoist to lift out the motor. ive been hearing from ppl that they have pulled out a d15 motor with a help of another person with their bare hands. also how difficult would you say the swap would be since im going from non vtec to vtec.
thanks.

Its not difficult if you know your way around a car and if nothing is seized. If you encounter a broken bolt and dont know how to properly deal with it, you will be in a world of hurt.
And there is no way you can properly lined up a motor and transmission in a vehicle with just two cars and your bare hands, UNLESS you place the engine and transmission on the floor and lower the car onto it.
My recommendation: Find a friend who has done a swap before and who has an engine hoist to come and help. It will make it a lot easier!
Also, if you are going from non vtec to vtec, you will need a P28 ecu, v-tec obd1 distributor and you will need to wire up v-tec as well.

^^ you just stole my post chris! id personally go d16z6 or d16y8 just because the y8 is newer, then again if you rebuilt your current motor and put a mini me head on it, that would suffice too. then you save the trouble of pulling the motor

things needed to make it easier... and trust me your gonna wanna make it easier, would Definetly be a hoist, preferably some friends who are willing to deal with the headache cuz 1 seized bolt can take up quite a bit of time... the last swap i did, took us about... 6 hours with 4 ppl and we were flying... we had a bind up with trying to swap trannys while motors were out but we got it... , if u have any questions feel free to ask.. id also suggest if u have the cash and sinse the motors out, clutch/flywheel *if its 5 speed* but definetly do a Z6 or Y8 swap and it is well wroth it, the satisfaction alone is worth it..

I swap a jdm d15b vtec in my 95 cx and it was my first swap even, it went pretty smooth and I love my 1.5L sohc vtec engine plus it came with the rare LSD 5 spd tranny
I say JDM D15B FTMFW

^^ jdm d15b is almost the same as d16z6. Imo both motors are great but if I was you, I wouldn't go for the y8. For the swap, I would highly recommend either finding a friend who has done a swap like this, or bringing it to a shop. I've seen people attempt to do the swap in the garage and almost always run into problems not knowing what to do next.
I've pulled a vr6 motor with my buddy by hand. We did take off the head first but it was still no walk in the park. Parts get heavy and you can do some serious damage to your back. So rent out a hoist and do it right.

To my knowledge there is no place where you can rent a hoist (legit). There are ways around it though..

see down here u can get them 50$ a day, but theres no room for slacking or error.. considering its 50$ a day.. lol fortunately i got a buddy who has a hoist and another 5 that have done quite a few motor swaps so my first one was all learning after that easy as cake. i can say make sure you don't lose ANYTHING if u take a bolt out, try to remember where it goes because when the motors out and u take that 2nd look... you go.. oh ****.. what did i do... lol (first time anyway), so eliminate any confusiong by labeling vaccum hoses/lines etc, and keeping bolts somewhere they wont get lost <--- this is a must!!!!

Thebossmeng- zc Sohc vtec is not d16z6.
Mitch, I know that feeling, when I ripped out a vr6 out of a vw, it was...quite exciting to see bunch of parts/plugs/hoses and confused what goes where, but figured it out bit by bit with a manual. (hate vw's with passion lol)
