Fuel Door won't stay shut???

02 Civic and the little plastic peice that is supposed to pop back to secure the fuel door is stuck inside the little cylinder that it comes out of. Not sure how this is designed but am I correct in assuming that a small spring inside is supposed to return that plunger to the extended position. Can I just replace that individual part of the system or do I have to buy the whole cable and everything else? Would getting some lubrication inside this unit help the situation. The car has been mine only a few weeks so I am not sure how long this problem has been evident.

My dad had the same problem on his car. They had to replace the whole cable. Dick around with it and see if you can get it to pop back out.

I took the plunger part out of the car and after wiggling the release end of it the plunger did pop back out and then I just reinstalled the unit back into the body of the car. I don't think its the cable unless its stuck in its sheath, it looks like the plunger is on an angle in its bore, can I just replace that and see if it works. I don't see how the cable disconnects from the plunger unit.

I have a feeling you won't be able to buy it separately. Take a look at this and see if you can find it, I couldn't find what section it was under.

Sir hatch and I even have the manuals for it that I found online but it doesn't mention how to disconnect the plunger unit from the cable so maybe it comes as one unit. I guess I should be happy at least the thing opens.
