it's a step in the right direction for the sheep.

1% of gst does nothing!

if they took 1% off of the federal income tax... then we're talking a little something.

assume you're pulling in $50,000 per year, one percent off your income saves you $500. $500/year does not make a significant difference on your lifestyle.

Assume you make $35,000 per year, you would have $350/year more.

the 1% you are getting now.. remember.. you save on purchases made from money you've already been taxed about 25% on (income, ei, cpp) on purchases many of which you really shouldn't have to pay taxes on (ie used cars with private sale)

yea whats the deal with buying used cars.
howcome the same product keeps getting taxed over and over again. i thought an item can only be taxed once.

they tax used cars because new car sales would plummet if you didn't pay any tax on a used car.

Although on a new car I think there are other taxes that are also tacked on, that you don't pay on a used car

gatherer, you are correct in regards to additional taxes.

but private sale should not include such taxes.. not on principal at least. we are not a communist country.. principles should not be derived towards so much market control.

whatever happened to a lassez-faire attitude?

government = garbage.

these are the same people who ban smoking and make marijuana legal.

You meant ban marijuana and make smoking legal I hope.
But your right bruce 1% of purchased items isn't going to make a difference, but remember they are taking 1% off now and eventually they will eliminate it all together. So its just a small step towards a bigger picture. Although this is great, I would much rather get my savings in one large lump sum, that way I can actually appreciate the tax cut. When I'm just buy things here and there I don't really notice, nor will it increase my spending.

they are going to eventually remove it? are you crazy? they lower gst by one percent, but they will increase it in other places... they aren't just going to give up money.

i meant what i said. smoking is becomming more and more of a hassle while marijuana is becoming more legal.

i remember being told to put out my cigarette by security at the ACC while being surrounded by people smoking pot. No one was bugging them. I walked 15 feet and lit up once again.

This is what pisses me off. I guess I am echoing other people's comments, but in the article:

"For example, those Canadians in the lowest income tax bracket - with taxable income of less than $36,378 -- will see a slight bump in the taxes collected on their paycheques beginning July 1. The Liberals, in their 2005 budget, set that rate at 15 per cent. The Conservatives today confirmed that rate but only until June 30 when it will jump up to 15.5 per cent."

15% of your income, taxed is theft! It was already bad enough to begin with and they raised it half of as percent for poor people like me.

If you earn $400 a week. You have $60 stolen from your paycheque so the Conservatives (and provincial gov) can pay for all of their inefficient government programs/ slaries and benifits.

This country did not have income tax prior to the war. The problem is, people nowadays are ignorant on how much is siphoned of their paycheques.

In my opinion, income should be untouchable. Raise tax on consumption (ie. GST), but reduce income tax. Help the people who want to save their money; not spend it.

Raise tax on consumption (ie. GST), but reduce income tax is what they do in other countries and it seems to work.

The problem I see with this country is that they rely on income tax too much.

the truth is, most of the population is always going to have a job; a job which can be taxed.

However, if tax is too high, you will decrease people's spending habits, and people will simply buy less.

What I am saying is that you can't enforce a population's spending habits but you can enforce them to pay tax on their income.

This is very controlling and high income tax is something I have no choice but to vote for. Liberals, Conservatives and the NDP never talk of reduced income tax. I simply cannot vote for a party that represents me. Taxation is a far bigger issue than gay marriage, but people don't pay attention to it.

I guess I will have to start my own lobby group.

i think i'm one of the most left winged people here, but i would never vote for any of our left wing parties.

they're bigger ****heads than the conservatives.

gay marriage and feminism were 2 of the hot 10 topics. i don't see what those have to do with being left wing.

we need some left wing radical guerilla warfare!

eh, or just like cheap beer and wings on wednesdays.
