Thermostat Install Help

I bought a NOMA thermostat to replace the old on at my parent's house.

Followed the instructions with the wiring but the heat won't turn on.. I can only turn on the central fan.

The wiring on the old thermostat has

W, Y, G, and Rc Rh (which are two terminals connected on the same wire)

the new thermostat

W, Y, G, R (so i connected the wire that was on Rc Rh to this one)

Am I doing something wrong here?

I can talk to him tonight, but the first thing I would do is trouble shoot.

Read the instructions and ****, whic i'm sure you've already done.

Some thermostats dont work with some units I believe.

Again, my brother does mostly all the electrical when we renovate houses.

Yeah ive gone through the manual countless times.. even looked at the furnace manual, according to all the info i've read this thermostat is compatible with the gas furnace.

When I connnect the thermostat, and switch on to HEAT, I hear the thermostat click on and than the display shows HEAT, but down at the furnace, nothing is happening.

When I switch the FAN from AUTO to ON, the vents have air blowing through,

Iv'e already installed the same model thermostat at another house where I run my office and it works fine. I bought 2 from Canadian Tire.

What's perplexing me is that one wire that connected to the old thermostat as Rh and Rc

I'm thinking I might just exchange this model for a better brand... like Honeywell instead of Noma.

Most thermostats have built in delays (the commercial ones I deal with at least), try leaving it set to heat for 10 minutes then go and see if the furnace has kicked on.

First of all take that Noma crap back and get a honeywell....any model of honeywell is better.

Then before you hook the wires to the t-stat go downstairs and pull the furnace doors off and look in the bottom compartment and write down what colour goes to what terminal.
then go back up stairs and match it all up...the new t-stats have a jumper between rc and rh usually....if rc and rh both have wires going to them on the furnace then take out the jumper and wire it up the same.

Whenever you change a thermostat it is best to turn off the power to the furnace so leave the doors off while you are doing this.

Usually it is red to r (and rc if jumpered)
white to w
green to g (which is your fan control)
black, orange to y which is your a/c

and if you have ac you will see another two wires hooked up in the furnace they will be another black and another white....going to y and c....those have nothing to do with the upstairs wires.

Thanks for the pointers Jay, I'll take a look at furnace to see where the wires are connected.

Yeah I'm more than likely to return that NOMA thing back for a Honeywell. Will probably do it by the weekend

No worries there Gallagher.
