Help in setting up LAN

OK, I want to transfer a bunch of stuff from my old computer to my new one. Being the gullible genius that I am, I didn't just burn the stuff on a cd, I took some people advice to set up a small LAN once my new computer is set up, and "easily" transfer the files then.

For some reason this isn't working. Both network cards are showing that they are working properly...um, I have a blue network cable attaching them, my buddy also gave me an orange crossover cable, which he said is necessary au lieu of the network one, but whatever. I tried with both. My new computer doesn't "see" my old one, and my old one doesn't see my new one. My buddy was experimenting with my over the phone last night with IP addresses and so on. We set the IP for my old, and new comps, and still nothing.

Anyone help?
We were going through the TC/IP dial up thing to set the IP#.
I have no clue as to how to do this thing!!!

Thanks

I can help ...

first orange cross over cord connect it ...

second set one computer in the tcp/ip network settings for the NIC card thats connected to the other computer, set the IP to 10.0.0.1

and in the other computer set the ip to 10.0.0.2

got that?

ok now make sure the protocol NETBEUI is installed... on both computers....

now chack the workgroup the both belong too... should be set to the same and the computer names should be different...

now go back into network settings and make sure the checkbox "share files " is checked on both computers

next.... restart them both then you should see the other in network neighbourhood

next right click ont he drive you want to transfer frokm anbd chose sharing...

enable sharing

go to other machine and in network neighbourhood double clickj on other machine and then on the drive ... copy files have a nice day ... if you don't get any of this just ask ...

POST NUMBER 4000 FOR ME THIS ONE WAS IT!!!

Thanks, Jason.

I get most of the stuff up until the NETBEUI.

What the hell is that? How do I set it up?
And I think my buddy can help with the workgroup changes.

As for the IP, theres also a Subnet mask. What do I enter there?

I'm pretty sure all the drives necessary have sharing enabled.

If you can tell me about the NETBUI, I think I should be OK with the rest.

My new one (XP) or old one (Win 98)?

Or does it matter as long as they are different?

ok subnet mask (oppps): 255.255.255.0 (will work)

as foir which is which doesn't matter...

as for Netbeui... in network settings you'll see a button for ADD (as in ADD protocol) click button then select protocol from the options and then microsoft and then netbeui...

OK, I see that I already have an NETBEAUI on my old comp. But it has the name of my ethernet card. The new one I added as per your instructions is a dialup one.

So thats it?

I'll set up the other comp NETBEAU and IP, and then switch monitors back to this one so I can see your reply. Then if anything ill be offline for a bit while my slow POS comp. resets.

Thanks man, much appreciated.

OK,well my netbui crap required the win98 cd to install on my old comp- which I at some point had borrowed to someone, and I cant find it.

My Xp comp, however, doesnt have any speciall add button. it has install. so i clicked install, and i clicked protocol, and then unlike on the 98 version wherwe i got to choose microsoft from a long list, all i had was 2 options:
1. network monitor driver
2. NW Link IPX/SAPX/NETBIOS compatible transport protocol

What do I do?

Well, seeing as you're in markham, and I'm in Mississauga, I guess I could probably find a buddy of mine who has the cd and borrow it from them. It wouldn't make sense to get it from you, but THANKS for the offer, man.

I'm just concerned as to what to do with regards to the netbeui on the XP computer....

dude, even in win98, y ou don't need netbui.

for your xp, leave the setting, for win98, just set tcp/ip
just set your xp to .1 and your 98 station to .2
192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2

subnetmask 255.255.255.0
on your win98, also set the gateway to 192.168.0.1

make sure they are int he same workgroup, then share the files, you're done.

for 98, the installation could be either under c:\windows, or c:\windows\system (could be okay, if not, then you need the cd, depending if you have installed a network card before)

netbeui is needed ... most of the time the computers won't see each other without it ...

as for how to do stuff in winXP I'm lost since I've refused to learn the differences.....

D'OH!

So I'll have to get a Win98 CD first.
I'll try with NETBUI first I guess...

I remember though, when we were changing my IP on my old computer, when I pressed restart, the POS just locked up with the Windows shutdown screen for like 5 minutes, and didn't restart at all. Does it take that long? Or is the computer screwed, and will not restart?
