Take a voltmetre to the damn thing!
I run mine open case as well...problem with that is, it attracts a lot of dust.
Good luck running the power supply outside; the length of wires probably wouldn't allow you to do that. Theres a main source running to the MB and several others running to HD, CD, Floppy.
Its not hard to replace the PS...and it doesn't cost much either, about 30 bux....replace it and find out. If its not that then you could've had a recent surge in the house or something and prolly fried your HD and/or your CD Rom as well.
