Comp Guys: Weird Audio Problem

Situation:

GF's comp was working fine except sound was acting up when we played mp3's (they would play super slow and sound like berry white). This is after I put win98se back on when she had Win ME ont here before but didn't like it (everythign worked perfect on Win ME, just had to reformat because comp was acting up)

Anyways I was playing around with her sound card drivers (her sound card is an ESS ES 1869, and I reinstalled them and as soon as I did that now in Control Panel >> Multimedia the preferred playback and recording device box are grayed out and I cant select anything, basically the whole first page is unusable.

The sound drivers are in fine, in system device manager they show up fine under audio and there working fine (no yellow exclamation marks as well)

I even went in safe mode and theres no yellow ex marks anywhere so it shows device working properly but yet no sound and I cant select the sound card in multimedia.

I looked all over the net and found similar problems and they said to go to add/remove and windows components for multimedia, did that nothing..

so now im tempted to just format and put 2k on her machine since its an Advantech Flat Panel computer Model PPC-150T, and everythign is integrated so I cant pull the SC out and put a new one in.

Any advice guys?

Oh I also tried SFC and it fixed 1 file but still no workie.
