Can cops have other jobs?

I'm having a "discussion" on another board about whether cops can have other jobs outside of policing. I'm saying no based on what my dad and two of my friends have told me. Something to do with a conflict of interest. I personally know alot of cops through my dad, school and my job and not one of them has another job. Any comments?

Their salary can support basic living, they don't need a second job.

They need to be on-call even when off duty, am I correct?

cops can have second jobs, but the second job has to be approved by the chief or something to make sure there isn't a conflict of interest

My brother in law and sister are both cops in Toronto. You can have a second job, but like the above posts mentioned, the job must be approved by the Chief. But think about this......aside from regular shifts, cops have an option of taking "pay duties". Basicly, they are hired as security, but may have to wear there uniform (ie. Chrismas time my brother in law was hired to stand outside the LCBO with another cop to make sure nobody ****s around). The reason they don't need another job......pay duties pay them $50 an hour, no lie. And remember, that's on top of there regular wage.

Mike....I'm going to have to agree with what other people have already said...that the job has to be given permission from above. However, with pay duties, I don't see why you would need a second job...certiantly not for the money. I can see if you want a second job, to get away from the "police life" every now and then. I know one officer here in Peel who made over $120,000 in one year. He worked every pay duty he could, and worked lots of OT (as the limit is very high). He only did this for one year, in order to pay off his house.

I work with a guy at A bar up here in Barrie who is also a cop (M.P), so yea, you can have a second job.... not that he needs the money, he just does it to be social.
