Try a b20 engine with a vtec head ...

b18c1 are really popular engines therefore they are more expensive and a little bit harder to find . If you can afford one then go for it but be ready to spend around 5000-6000 ( swap , tranny , turbo set up, installation ) but you will probably have a 250-300 whp car

Well, right now, I'm actually seriously thinking about selling my 86 MR2 project car and buying a b20 engine to build up with a vtec head for a goal of 200whp NA. Knowing how cheap b20's are and how vtec heads are becoming more and more available and affordable, it makes total sense to me.

But then, I'm doing all the work myself which will save me a ton of money.

How mechanically inclined are you? If you need a shop to do the work for you, that is going to narrow your options some-what depending on your budget.

If you get a shop to build you a b20 vtec, it could end up costing more in the end after paying for all the labour and tuning etc... then it would to swap in a GSR (b18c1).

GSR engines are a good place to start. Larger displacement which gives better low-mid range power and more torque then a b16, but same top end power as a jdm b16. They are easily modded as most of the b-series engines are.

The honda b-series engines are like lego blocks. The combinations are almost endless!

whats ur budget on ur build? if u dont have much to spend u can do a junkyard turbo setup on ur D. if you got some cash to spend drop in a H22,or B20 vtec like MPR is saying cuz its fairly cheap and u get good power gains without turbo or H22.
